Darjeeling is derived from the name “Dorjee – ling” which mean The Land of Thunderbolt. The town is nestled on the lap of the majestic Kanchezonga, the third highest peak of the world along side with Mt. Everest, the highest peak indeed. The history of Darjeeling is traced from it being a part of the Sikkim Kingdom. Darjeeling was separated from Sikkim on the request of The East India Company and was added to the territory of Calcutta now Kolkata. The mesmerizing beauty of Darjeeling was sufficient to captivate the minds of the English Gentlemen.
Darjeeling today has become one the of the desired hill station of the world. Not only because of the beauty has Darjeeling captured the mind of the people but it’s also through the vast lineage of the hard working hill people and their hospitality, the variety of flora and fauna collection, tourism and the best quality tea, village tourism and adventure sports.

... One can catch a train to Siliguri and book a taxi to enter the beautiful Queen of the Hill or else take a joy ride on the heritage Himalayan Toy Train, the main attraction of the Hills. The train or the cab will take you to the plains in Sukna and making its way through the slopes in Kurseong and then to Ghoom which is in fact the second highest railway station in the world, 9 km away from the’’ Queen of the Hill”.
The touch of the cold breeze makes us aware of our presence in the Green Heaven. There are five interesting sites one must visit while on Darjeeling tour. In a chronological order they are- The Japanese Peace Pagoda, The Batasia Loop, Tiger Hill “the sunrise point”, the oldest Ghoom Monastery and the Lebong Race Course. Travelling is incomplete without enjoying the delicious mix cuisine of Darjeeling. The mixed races of people in Darjeeling have brought diversity in the cuisine of the hill people and the tourists. The dumplings are on the top of a menu. Recreation is not only limited in a tour but one can also experience a trek on the foot of the snow capped Himalayas, enjoying wild nature and breath taking sceneries, “taking nothing but memories and leaving nothing but footprints”. The Mountaineering Institute gives the tourist a professional trek experience. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a home for the wild beast and endangered species. The Chowrasta – a sitting room for all where one can take a pony ride along the Mall Road or relax with a cup of tea in a luring tourist spot.
How can one forget about tea gardens in Darjeeling during visit to North east Darjeeling? The story of tea is as old as the town itself or in the Scotland the say “as old as whisky”. The cool climate in the region has favored tea growing in the hills and made the Tea Gardens are the hallmark of Darjeeling. The tourist can derive a unique experience to witness how the green leaves in the bushes are transformed into one of the most expensive tea leaves in the world.
The Hills covered in the blanket of mist is a delightful destination for all kind of tourists.
