Then And Now: Looking At How Senior Care Facilities Can Work With In Home Elder Care
Dignity seems to wane with age. It’s unfortunate, but true, that many of our treasured seniors will at some point need elder care. It used to be that when grandmom or grandpop got “up in years” and started forgetting things, we would bring them into our homes to care for them. We could even sometimes uproot our spouses and children to move in with our elders and look after them when they had their “senior moments.” Life is just entirely too hectic for this anymore, and it’s a shame, but all is not lost. We can still provide the dignity and respect our elders have earned. We can still help them live their golden years with dignity, simply by providing them with proper elder care.
Once upon a time, a husband and wife, and three point two children could buy a home with a yard and a white picket fence, raise the family, send the kids off to college, and move grandpop in after grandmom passed away (because he couldn’t get around so well) all on one single salary: dad’s. The world has become far too face paced, and far too difficult to get ahead in for most of us to do this anymore, but what ...
... we can do, is seek out professional help for when the time comes that our beloved octogenarian needs help. In home senior care is becoming more and more commonplace as people begin to realize that nursing homes aren’t always the only choice. Our seniors have worked arduously their entire lives to buy, keep, and maintain their home, and a great many of them only ask that they be allowed the luxury of living in it for as long as possible. While it’s true that in some cases elder care means utilizing a senior care facility to see to all the intricacies of our loved one’s medical needs, it’s also true that in many cases, what they really need is simply someone to be there with them, help them around the house, have a conversation, prevent them from getting bored, or simply make sure they don’t fall. Not everyone can drop what they’re doing, and move in with grandmom to keep an eye on her and make sure she stays safe. It simply isn’t possible. What is possible, however, is employing the services of an elder care professional.
This is not to say senior care facilities are outmoded. Quite the opposite: senior care facilities are indispensible. Most senior care establishments are also rehabilitation facilities, or work closely with one, and as such, are invaluable for caring for your loved one after a life-changing event like a stroke or heart attack. These facilities have highly specialized staff dedicated to the care and well-being of seniors to near exclusion, and many are geared toward rehabilitation and follow up at-home elder care for their patients. Ultimately, the point is that senior care facilities in conjunction with, not to the exclusion of an in home elder care professional can give you the peace of mind you so desperately seek, and make sure your loved one is receiving all the proper attention they require.
