Stomach ulcer is one of the prevalent health problems among the people of all age groups. Though there are oodles of reasons for the development of stomach ulcer, one common reason that doctors site is the person skipping the meals or not eating on time. However, before we start, let us see what stomach ulcer is. Also called as peptic ulcer, the stomach ulcer is the erosion in the gastrointestinal tract of the stomach. Duodenal ulcer usually happens in the small intestine right below the stomach. Gastric ulcers are the ones that are formed in the stomach, the reason for which could be the formation of gas when the person fails to eat on time. The stomach ulcer is contagious in nature; that is, it can be spread from one person to another. The ulcer that occurs in the duodenum is benign while the stomach ulcer can sometimes be malignant. A stomach ulcer can vary from a size of 0.8 inch to about ¾ of an inch.

Causes of peptic ulcer:

The main cause of stomach ulcer is the infection on the intestinal lining caused due to the production of excess hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This condition happens when ...
... the person skips or fails to take food on time. Due to no intake of food, the glands produce the HCL acid to counter the alkaline condition that ultimately hurts the lining of the intestine. Infection in the gastric and duodenal linings by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori is another common reason for stomach ulcers. An infection caused by this bacterium can get transmitted from one person to another through sharing of food or water. However, this infection can be treated with antibiotics. Any injury to the mucosal lining can also cause gastric ulcers. As a matter of fact, too much stress can also lead to the secretion of hydrochloric acid that in turn can result in the development of stomach ulcers. Research has shown that the frequent use of pain killers such as aspirin can also lead to the formation of peptic ulcers. Doctors say that excessive drinking and smoking can also cause stomach ulcers.

Symptoms:

The first symptom of stomach ulcer can be observed when the person experiences a burning sensation in the stomach. This irritation may last for about 30 minutes or more. Peptic ulcer that can be caused due to indigestion or starvation is also connected with heartburn. Pain may be experienced in the upper abdominal region or near the breastbone. Majority of the ulcer patients experience this pain during the night; however, one can get a temporary relief by drinking a glass of milk or warm water and taking a nap. However, if you are looking for quick home remedies to ward off the irritation, you may surf the net and refer the websites using any of the high-speed Internet connections such as the FiOS Internet.

Appetite is another symptom of stomach ulcer. However, this can be weird at times. Some patients may not feel hungry at all while some always feel stomach-empty. There is a high probability that the person may put on too much weight suddenly even if he doesn't eat well while there is another category of people who tend to eat well yet suffer from weight loss. A majority of the people with peptic ulcers also experience vomiting and discomfort immediately after having their meals.

Problems associated with stomach ulcer:

The main problem with stomach ulcer is that it affects the nerves in and around the stomach. This can cause a great amount of pain. Sometimes, this can even cause the rupture or erosion of the blood vessels or a tear along the walls of the stomach causing peritonitis. Though stomach ulcer is common, it is one health issue that can't be ignored. The best thing to do is to consult the doctor without any delay and get it cleared before the symptoms turn wild.
