Being a dog owner, it can sometimes be an embarrassing situation when your dog misbehaves in front of other people. I know, because having two labrador retrievers have placed me in situation that has tested my patience. Whenever your dog gets agitated seeing another dog or when a guest comes, you know that the situation is going to be tough.

We must have potty trained our dog when it was a puppy. Some of us teach our dogs certain basic tricks like shaking hands, roll over, fetch, etc. It is good, but in the area of behavior we sometimes forget to teach the basic things. A dog is a social animal and like all pet owners we would like our dogs to socialize with our guests, friends and other pets. No one wants a dog that is uncontrollable and difficult to maintain. As dog owners we need to take the responsibility of our dogs and when our dog causes any trouble, it is up to us to correct it.

Many of us must have sent our dogs to the obedience school. But as years pass by a dog can sometimes forget the certain behavior or tricks that it has learned. We need to regularly check on these behaviors by constantly playing and training them. This will help you in a long run as you could become more close to your dog and your dog will always listen to your command. No matter whatever happens or someone else says, your dog will not move from its place unless you give the command.

Whenever guest comes to your house, you must have faced a situation where your dog gets excited and tries to attack the guest. You shouldn’t try to punish your dog as it is doing as per its instincts. Dogs do not like anyone else coming to their territory. In this case, your dog regards your house as its territory. Dogs like wild animals will go to any extend to protect their territory. So in order to avoid this behavior, you need to set certain commands and train your dog. Always train your dog to be calm when it gets agitated. Us the command like “Control”, “Sit”, etc to train and control it. Make sure to give a treat whenever it listens to your command and does it properly.

The rewarding system is the best way to train your dog. Shouting at it or chaining it to the dog house will do no good. It will make your dog more aggressive and sometimes can harm you. Don’t try to scare your dog as sometimes scaring your dog may make it a coward. This is not good as when it sees a robber, instead of attacking him, your dog will get scared and take cover under the bed or table.

Whenever guests come to your house, inform them not to make any sudden movement in case your pet is in the room. I had to go through this kind of situation some months back. I was watching my favorite TV show on my FiOS TV along with my friend. Suddenly my friend got up fast to answer a call on his phone, when my dog ran towards him and tried to attack him. He thought that my friend had stood up to harm me. Anyway, my friend escaped as in the nick of the movement he just moved away from the path of my dog.

One thing we all must know is that dogs get their behavior from us. Yes! Since from the young age, a dog is raised by us, it copies our mood and character. It observes how we behave in certain situation and follows that in its life. So at times getting angry and blaming your dog will do no good.
