An electric juggernaut has come crashing into the world, changing the lives of millions. It is a wheel of fate whose efficiency has had tremendous impact on global conditions. The name is AUTOMATION. Unemployment lines swell on account of it.

But its effect on the game of gin rummy is trifling.

Since gin surged to the fore in 1939, to snowball and infatuate millions of persons with its brand of excitement, zest, and action, there have been few modifications. True, variations of the game sprouted, as the fast-growing rummy family now numbers hundreds; yet if your grandfather played the game at its inception and did a Rip Van Winkle for twenty years, he could sit down today and not be lost despite the passage of time.

Beaten, he would still claim, You were lucky. What your grandfather perhaps didn't discern is that to be tops in the game takes instinct, desire, practice, and study, in addition to having one hundred percent control of your faculties, sufficient ...
... sleep, stomach in good condition, brain nimble.

For practice, it is a good policy to deal two hands and play one against the other. In order to do this you must pick up one hand, close your mind to the other one, and make your play. Then do the same with the other hand. These mental gymnastics oil your brain. Admittedly, this takes a particular kind of mental discipline, and not everyone can do it. But if you can, it's a great way to improve your game.

Another form of practice is shuffling. This may sound ridiculous and cause you to ask, Who can't shuffle cards? The answer is that many persons can't do it satisfactorily. When the cards are not shuffled thoroughly, a great many return in sequence. And if you just sweated out a poor hand, you certainly don't want to get a portion of it back again.

Cards should be riffled seven or eight times. If you follow numerology, choose your own lucky number of times, as long as it is seven or over. Always have the deck facing downward on the shuffle. If you want to cut a deck two or three times, there is no reason this should offend your opponent. This is your privilege. Don't cut too close to either end of the deck. Deal low, too, so as not to expose the cards. Be certain the bottom card is never revealed.
Changing decks to change luck doesn't help. A good shuffle may.

Ignore any criticism from an opponent, should he object to your two or three time cutting of the cards. He may caustically remark, What's the matter, don't you trust me? If either one of you is suspicious of the honesty of the other, it's better to seek a game with someone else.

Beware of any player you don't know intimately who casually says, Here, I've brought a couple of decks of cards. Even though you believe you're witnessing him breaking the manufacturer's seal, he could have marked them beforehand.

Playing partners in a social game is fine, but should it be for fairly high stakes, it is better to go it alone. A loner does it all by himself, carrying full responsibility on his shoulders, enjoying the plaudits, self-satisfaction, or the money if he wins.

When playing with a group of strangers, many people feel they are safeguarded because they will be rotating partners throughout the evening. This is no guarantee. The other players may be in cahoots as a group, with a pre-arrangeinent that whichever one is your partner at the moment will just happen to lose.

Partnerships or teams can be a risky alliance for other reasons also. Your partner might be an inferior player. He may enter the game in a highly nervous condition motivated by a business deal that failed or a disagreement with someone. Then, in an agitated frame of mind, he may play like there's no tomorrow, which is unfair to a partner, who knows there's going to be a tomorrow and wants to enjoy it without a depletion in his bank account.
