A Professional Motivational Speaker Needs A Story, Not Silver!

If you have a compelling story and are willing to tell it – these are key to developing a business as a Professional Motivational Speaker
Over the past 21 years, I have seen quite a number of people entering the market and leaving the building some time later, lighter in the pocket, but possibly richer for the experience.

Why had they failed?

Oftentimes it was quite simply the absence of a compelling authentic story. Their resources allowed them to access many potential customers with their message; but their delivery, core message and lack of authenticity made their career a very short lived one.

Motivational speaking isn’t just a transfer of content - it is a transfer of energy and presence. Your energy and presence comes from an internalized compelling story. Your current occupation is your purpose – it isn’t a job – it is a vocation. Most likely you are populating that special space where you have never worked a day in your life, as Confucius alluded to!.

On other occasions people had failed even though they had the story. The problem was they weren’t prepared to tell ...
... it! Disclosure made them vulnerable.

I remember one such example of a property developer who approached me for advice – he had a very compelling story but didn’t want to insult or challenge his existing peer group with his new personal revelations. So instead of taking the path less traveled; he chose the middle way – a way populated by millions and he failed miserably to make an impact.

Interestingly enough he was shocked that a significant marketing budget didn’t achieve his objectives in the short term. Money helps without a doubt, but is completing secondary to having a compelling story in this business.

Of course, being vulnerable is part of being authentic! Indeed to survive in the current challenging times; you need to be able to become comfortable in the uncomfortable.
Ironically audiences don’t just want to know about the successes – they need to see that you are human – they want to know how you dealt with the setbacks and how these events shaped your strategy and indeed yourself.

So if you are currently contemplating a career as a professional motivational speaker ; I suggest you start the process by scripting your story – warts and all. Enjoy the process of self discovery!
