So is there anyone who does not love to eat lobsters? I guess there are none (except of course those who are prone to allergies). When anyone talks about seafood the first things that come to our mind are lobsters. Although lobsters can mean any number of crustaceans, the term “lobster” is used only to mean the clawed lobsters.

A Maine lobster is the term used for a species of lobsters that are found in the North American coasts that are adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. These lobsters are larger than their traditional counterparts in terms of size and weight. While the traditional lobsters are generally 25 cm to 50 cm long, the Maine lobsters can reach to a length of almost 64 cm and may weigh more than 20 kg.

A lobster is an invertebrate (lacks spinal cord). Its basic anatomy consists of head and thorax joined together and the abdomen. The color of its blood is blue due to the presence of haemocyanin that is rich in copper. The Maine lobster became popular as seafood in the 20th century. Before that however these lobsters were used as fishing baits or as fertilizers.

There ...
... is an interesting fact about lobsters. In the fish markets, it has been noticed that the flavors of a lobster varies inversely with the price. This is something that does not occur in any other case. This happens because of the shedding of the skin that the lobsters undergo. When the lobsters shed their skin, they tend to expose their soft meat which has a very good flavor. But the problem is that these lobsters that have recently shed their skin are not fit to be transported to other fish markets. The new layer of shell makes the lobsters easily prone to death. However, on the other hand, those lobsters that retain their old shell are of great demand as they can be transported to large distances without the lobsters getting killed. But their meat does not taste good and are priced extremely high.

Seafood restaurants in USA often serve a mix and match dish for the diners. This dish consists of the tail meat of a Maine Lobster and a piece of beef steak. As a result of this unique combination, the dish has been named as Surf and Turf. There are a number of lip smacking dishes that can be made from the lobsters. The fun fact is that the lobsters that are now considered to be part of sea food delicacies were once considered cheap source of protein for mainly the slaves. Thinking of ordering a dish of Lobster?
