The Phenology Of The Jamaican Blue Mountains
Coffee originated centuries ago and is currently apart of almost every countries tradition. Many regions of the world are famous for creating premium coffee that will be distributed to other parts of the world. Some popular regions for coffee farming are the Tarrazu region of Costa Rica, the Sidamo region of Ethiopia, and the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee has a deep history that can be rooted back to the early 1700’s. For centuries Jamaican Coffee has been traded from continent to continent because of its supreme quality. Why is Blue Mountain Coffee a leader in the gourmet coffee industry? The phenology of the Blue Mountains is what separates this coffee from the rest.
Factors such as altitude and temperature play a large role in the flowering and fruit development of coffee. Jamaican coffee is mostly traded in the form of fruit after harvesting. Once the farmer sells the fruit to the processor it is arranged, grouped, and processed. When growing Jamaican Coffee in the Blue Mountains both altitude and temperature are influential factors. Coffee grown at higher altitudes of the mountain will ...
... sustain lower temperatures than coffee cultivated at low altitudes. December through mid February is the coldest months in the growing regions of Jamaica. The summer months of May through August are where the higher temperatures are present.
The cultivation of coffee occurs during the winter months. Ideal temperatures for coffee cultivation are between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius. Temperatures higher than this can decrease the photosynthetic activity. Since farmers obviously cannot control the temperature in the region they must use other methods. Regulating shade can help fluctuate temperatures in the favor of farmers. Jamaican coffee farmers have mastered the art of managing shade in order to product the highest quality coffee cherries.
After the winter months have passed, the flower process begins to take place in Blue Mountains during the spring. During this time at low elevation it is best if the temperature is between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius and an average amount of rainfall is present. For mid and high farm elevations the range in temperature decreases about three degrees. These temperatures have an enormous impact in the flowering process of the coffee.
It is quite clear that factors such as altitude and temperature are very important in the cultivation of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. Reggie’s Roast is a farmer and roaster of Blue Mountain Coffee.
