What is Boot USB?

A flash drive, which is an external hardware device, is also known with the name Boot USB. The function of this flash drive is to boot the operating systems so as to host controller particularly to personal computer systems. In the previous days, the importance and the existence of such embedded service pack was not at all known by the computer users. These bootable usb flash drives are most popularly called by the term Live USBs. The first and the foremost characteristic feature of this device are to boot the Windows by way of USB flash drive. Generally, these drives are utilized for the operating systems like Linux but at present, these are as well used to boot the Windows operating system and Mac.

One can find two important kinds of Live USB in general and these kinds are mentioned below:

1) Live CD derived:

This sort of Live USB is made with the help of ISO or disc image. It is actually an archive file that is found in a live CD. Save this file in the USB device ...
... where it gets booted.

2) Full install:

The other type of Live USB is Full install. It is similar to that of installing an operating system with some amendments like swapping partitions etc in the hard drive.

Usage of Live USBs offers the users with many advantages but there are also some disadvantages that come along. But let us first look at its advantages.

Advantages:

1) The process of booting from usb is possible and highly protected with the operating systems like Linux, Mac, Windows and BSD. Booting can be done to all these with this USB drive.

2) These are highly recommended for the multiple users who normally share a number of applications and files etc. Alteration and restoration of any data which you save in this boot device can be done.

3) The programs of small size which are present in the USB devices operate more quickly than the data or programs that you have stored in the hard drive or other optical devices.

4) These are highly flexible in nature and can be carried to any place the user moves.

5) When compared to other devices, this Live USB provides more security and there won’t be any dependency on the operating system.

All the above are the benefits that a user can gain with the Live boot disc. Now just take a look at some of the disadvantages:

Disadvantages:

1) Some of the computers may not include certain configuration requirements which help the USB booting. IF you come across such situations, you have to opt for CDs or floppy disks.

2) The durability of the Live USB can decrease gradually.

3) When there is no proper support from USB at the time of booting, then the speed of data transfer will be low.

4) On Intel based Mac computers, the live boot up cd programs are bootable only in the BIOS mode and hence they are highly dependent on BIOS.
