Someone once said, ‘Always tell the truth and you won't need a good memory'. In my past, because of some character failures I have since dealt with, I sometimes felt I had to cover myself by not telling the whole truth. Unfortunately, that can become a negative pattern. Probably like me, you may also have been in situations in which you felt you had to try to cover yourself. Now, we are not necessarily lying, but we are not necessarily telling the truth either.
In the movie A Few Good Men, Tom Cruise challenges Jack Nicholson about the truth, and Jack Nicholson demands, What do you want? Tom Cruise replies, I want the truth! Jack Nicholson, in that incredible piece of cinematography, declares, You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!
Most of us are familiar with the quote from Shakespeare's Hamlet: ‘To thine own self be true.' I have learned that a lack of honesty will always, like a boomerang, come back. If you want to sink a boat, all you need is a small pinhole at the bottom of the boat. What starts as a pinhole, ends up as a disaster.
Don't allow your conscience to be numbed by a lack ...
... of integrity. A friend of mine who is a public speaker once boarded a bus and gave the driver $2 for a $1 ticket, expecting to receive $1 in change. However, the bus driver gave him change of $3. My friend sat at the back of the bus and thought, ‘Wow, what a blessing.' But he realized that he had better be honest with the bus driver, so he approached the bus driver and said, ‘Mr driver, I gave you $2, the bus ticket is $1, and yet you gave me $3 back in change. So you gave me more money than I originally gave you'. The driver replied, ‘I know I did.' ‘You do?' my friend asked, surprised. ‘Yes, I heard you speak last night on honesty'.
Have you ever heard people say, 'To be perfectly honest with you'? The truth is, you are either honest or you are not. You can't be imperfectly honest. You are either telling the truth or you are not. Truth needs no preface; it needs no introduction. It speaks for itself.
Honesty is not the best policy, it is the only policy. I have learned in life that once you open the door to dishonesty about your feelings, your needs and your struggles, you are not only lying to others, you are also lying to yourself. Remember, be honest to yourself and you will always be honest to others. Honest people stand out in a crowd... and they attract. If you are looking for a life partner, who would you rather choose: a dishonest person or an honest person? If you are choosing a business partner, who would you choose?
Challenge
Can I encourage you to be honest in your business dealings and to be honest in your relationships. Then go to a higher level and be honest to yourself. The big lesson is this: 'What you don't learn through truth, you will experience through pain.' Choose truth!
