Inventor of the spark plug and automatic transmission, CF Kettering, stated, ‘My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.' Think of that, your interest has got to be in the future because that is where you are going to spend the rest of your life. The great Winston Churchill had to learn this. Most people are unaware that Churchill faced incredible obstacles in his personal life. We only view him in light of his leadership and public success in World War II. We see the snap shot of the hero during that time of great trial, but we need to see the movie length version of his life.
Churchill was a man of steely will who led his nation to triumph against Hitler. But years before that victorious moment, he plunged through a succession of pitfalls, each one worse than the last. In August 1929, Churchill managed to acquire approximately $70,000. It was an unimaginable figure for one single month's work. He invested nearly all of the money in American stock and wrote a note to his wife saying how pleased he was to have reached a place of financial independence. Ninety days later the ...
... stock market fell and Churchill lost virtually everything. He experienced ninety days of financial security, then the bottom fell out. That alone could cause someone to spiral into the depths of despair, but two more devastating blows were to follow.
In 1931, after serving his entire adult life as a central figure in the British Government, Churchill was denied a Cabinet post. He was banished to the political wilderness while Adolf Hitler was building his war machine. Churchill, the only British politician who saw the reality of such a tyrant, was put out to pasture. Then that same year, while trying to hold things together financially and while fending off depression from his political defeat, Churchill took a tour of Canada and the United States.
In New York City he looked the wrong way before crossing the street and was hit by a taxi travelling at 35 miles an hour. He landed in hospital where he clung to his life by a thread. Churchill was 57 years old, and in three years three life-shattering experiences had devastated him. Yet he recovered from those episodes. Nine years later, at the right moment in history, the government that had ignored him turned to him in desperation to save not only the future of England but that of the Western World. But that never would have happened if Churchill had not buried the past.
Challenge
Perhaps you have experienced some devastating setbacks, some death blows. Don't bury your dreams, don't bury your hopes, and don't bury aspirations. Instead, bury your past. Your future depends on it.
