Mma Gear

MMA or Mixed Martial Arts uses very little equipment in the cage; a pair of shorts of either the MMA board-shorts variety or sometimes the trunk style Vale Tudo shorts, a gumshield, groin protector and a pair of 4oz MMA gloves however in training there is an awful lot of equipment that could well be described as “MMA Gear”
Mma is true to its name. It borrows technically from many different styles of martial arts commonly including Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling and Boxing. Within the equipment it uses it also borrows gear from many different sports.
Essential MMA Gear includes a few technical clothing items such as MMA shorts, a rash guard and sometimes compression shorts with a groin protector but what you wear certainly comes secondary to the mma equipment side which include several types of gloves, protective gear, focus pads, kick pads and a fair amount of strength and conditioning equipment too.
MMA Gear starts to my mind with gloves, because of the different styles of training used most MMA guys will have at least 2 sets of gloves. A set of boxing sparring gloves usually 14 or 16oz ...
... and a set of MMA competition gloves or sometime MMA sparring gloves. Like their boxing or Thai counterparts they may also keep a pair of bag gloves to hand too!
Protective MMA Gear includes both the heavy duty Thai style shinguards, Lighter MMA shinguards which are designed t stay on whilst grappling as well as potentially boxing headguards, body protection, hand wraps and knee pads.
Many MMA fighters train differently from one day to the next sometimes focussing on one skill set or discipline. This means many MMA fighters have different kits for different days. For example a jiu jitsu based fighter may consider his BJJ Gi a piece of MMA Gear although many fighters concentrate wholly on No Gi Jiu jitsu nowadays.
Much of the equipment is completely borrowed from the sports it draws from. Muay Thai has become the standard striking system of MMA and most MMA gyms have a set of Thai pads, a belly protector and 6ft low kicks bag in their MMA Gear list!
Boxing equipment also is prominent in the MMA gym with punch bags, focus mitts, floor to ceiling balls and many other pieces of kit of enable effective practice of a fighters boxing training.
