Nature has given man a lot of wonderful plants, one of them - Aloe. There are more than two hundred species of this plant, but Aloe Barbadensis Miller - Aloe Vera - is most of all endowed with beautiful nature’s healing properties. The plant has very strong anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antimycotic action and is a natural antibiotic. Its therapeutic and healing properties have been used for more than five thousand years. And nowadays it is difficult to find someone who did not hear anything about its medicinal properties. Aloe is simply loaded with biologically active substances, including polysaccharides, salicylic acid, vitamins (A, C, B group), and essential amino acids.
The list of substances contained in aloe vera, provides some answers to questions about the effectiveness and the biochemical basis of this remarkable plant. Subtle mechanisms of biochemical effects often remain unknown, but the presence of known components can help to understand their essential properties. Without a doubt, all the ingredients in the plant are in mutually reinforcing relation. We hope the new researches and new discoveries will ...
... help explain the health-restoring effects of aloe. And sure enough it will become the basis for wider use of aloe in medicine and health industry.
Most often, aloe vera gel is used externally as a remedy for burns (including sun burns), frostbite, psoriasis, and a cold (herpes). Some people also use it to quickly heal the wounds left after surgery, and pressure ulcers. Some scientific evidences support the effectiveness of aloe vera gel. It contains substances that improve blood circulation in the most delicate blood vessels, as well as kill bacteria. The combination of these effects should really promote faster healing of skin lesions. So far, however, the data is insufficient to make accurate conclusions. One study even showed that aloe vera gel can slow down wound healing. Scientists continue to study its effects.
Laxative effect becomes noticeable after about 10 hours after beginning of taking of the gel. In long-term use to achieve the same effect, the patient must increase the dose; the substances that are contained in the milky sap make cells of the inner membrane of the intestine gradually lose potassium. This leads to a peculiar paralysis of the intestinal walls. Therefore, taking aloe vera gel over a long period of time can be dangerous.
Aloe vera juice can be taken orally for epilepsy, asthma, colds, bleeding, absence of menstruation, colitis, depression, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, bursitis, osteoarthritis, glaucoma, as well as some other eye diseases.
However, modern medicine considers internal consumption of aloe vera milky juice, especially in large doses, is not completely safe. There are suspicions, although they are not enough reasonable, that some substances contained in the aloe vera milky juice, can cause cancer. In addition, the milky juice of aloe vera is harmful to the kidneys, it can cause serious damage to this internal organ, and in especially severe cases even death.
Recent studies show that a daily intake of 10-20 ml of aloe gel for 12 weeks can help to decrease cholesterol levels by an average of 15%. The data from one study is not enough to make definitive conclusions with respect to such properties of the plant, but people with high cholesterol levels can also try taking aloe vera, but in small doses.
