Matheran-the Jungle On Top

Matheran is a hill station located in Raigarh district in the State of Maharashtra, India. Matheran, the jungle on the top was developed by the British in 1850. This picturesque town is perched atop the Matheran ranges in the Sahyadri mountains and is a popular tourist destination. Vehicles are prohibited from entering the hill station limits and because of this the hill station is free from pollution. Tourists here are truly blessed in this pollution free and green environment. Matheran also offers beautiful and scenic views from its 38 peak points.
Panorama point is the most popular attraction; it offers a memorable view of the sunrise. This is a spacious space and is often visited by picnic goers. The point also offers magnificent views of surrounding locations of Chanderi, Navara-Navari, Peb fort and Mhas-mel. Beautiful views of Prabal fort, Hart point and Monkey point can also be seen from here. Tourists often enjoy themselves by echoing their voices off the surrounding peaks. ... attraction because if it’s pristine beauty and it is the main source of drinking water for Matheran. A popular ancient temple, Pisarnath is located in the banks of the lake. The temple is visited by hindus abd believed to have the power to bestow goodluck on devotees.It is a popular picnic spot, especially during the monsoons. One can also enjoy a view of beautiful flora along the lake and domestic birds. Prabal Fort is another must see destination in Matheran. Presently it is in ruins and is located at the flat top of the hill named Prabhal hills in the western side of Matheran. The fort is of historical importance. It was captured by Chathrapathi Shivaji from Mughals and it is believed that the forts contained precious treasures during the time of capture. There is also a pond on top of Prabal hills.
Matheran also offers good trekking trails like the Shivaji ladder. Adventurous tourists can also opt for parasailing and paragliding. It is a path of steps cut into the hills and is used by locals. The main bazaar offers unique memorabilia.
Temperatures vary from 16 degrees Celsius in winter to 32 degree Celsius in summer. Visitors can go to Matheran round the year but the best time to visit is from October to May. Accommodations are available in the form of self contained rooms, group accommodation and machans. The nearest airport is Mumbai, 100 kms away. A train can be taken from Mumbai to Neral or from Pune to Neral and then board the Neral to Matheran mountain train. Buses are also available from Mumbai and Pune to Neral.
