Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee: Importance Of Coffee Roasting Process
Coffee Fanatics have specific ways of distinguishing the taste of their favorite coffee and identifying what they believe are the best coffee beans. Coffee is both a beverage and a lifestyle. People take their time and drink the coffee slow, rather than making it a quick beverage such as many sodas, or water. Two important stages in building the specific tastes of coffee are the cultivation and roasting stages.
The cultivation process of coffee depends on the specific environment and techniques involved in the growing the coffee beans. Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee goes through very strict regulations and how the beans are produced. The best coffee beans are raised in elevations 3,000 and 5,000 feet high. It also goes through a standards testing after the beans are produced to ensure authenticity.
Because of the effort put forth to ensure Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is a premium coffee, the roasting process should be handled accordingly. The purpose of coffee roasters is to transform the ...
... properties of original coffee beans into drinkable coffee products. When you begin the roasting process the characteristics of the coffee beans change. The original coffee beans have acids, protein, and caffeine but it is missing the drinkable taste. The color, taste, and smell of the beans change and adjust according to what the coffee roaster would like to shift it to.
There are two types of Coffee Roasters: “Hot-air coffee roasters” and the “drum machine”. For Hot-air coffee roasters, the coffee beans are placed onto a perforated plate inside a container and heated air is pushed up into beans and changes the chemical composition of the bean. Drum machines use horizontal rotating drums that tumble the coffee beans in a heated environment. The heat is produced using either electricity, burned natural gas, or a few cases fire wood. The more heat the beans absorb, the darker the coffee beans become. During the warm-up stage, approximately 205 degrees – 207 degrees Celsius, the bean make similar cracking sounds as popcorn and change into a yellow tint. The dark roasted coffee is a dark brown/ chocolate colored shade.
Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is initially roasted under lower temperatures than most coffee beans at the warm-up stage. This is done to prevent the roast from being too dark because of the low density of the coffee beans. The ideal Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee roast brings it to a yellow/light-brown color. The coffee beans are typically roasted in Drum machines because the initial environment temperature of less than 350 degrees. After a few minutes the temperature is raised to gradually to keep consistent heat to the coffee beans. For hot-air coffee roasters, it is important to roast 20% less beans at a less than Drum machine. This should allow more air flow and an even warm-up of the coffee through the initial darkening stages.
Coffee roasters can change the quality of the coffee bean. Coffee fanatics can purchase small roasters for their own homes. They can have more control over the flavor and the freshness of their coffee. Most coffee is distributed commercially and shipped from other countries. The ideal coffee product would have a long shelf life and maintain freshness.
