Don't Work Through The Pain, Treat Every Ankle Sprain
If you are an athlete who is currently dealing with minor to severe pain in the ankle joint, you could have experienced an ankle sprain during the course of some rigorous game time. The pain that comes with this type of injury occurs because the ligaments in that area were overextended and most likely ripped with many small tears. Though you could have easily just pulled it a tiny amount and have to deal with no more than a mild throbbing sensation, you should always let a doctor check it out.
In the case of an inversion sprain, which is really the most common type that most people go through, the injury occurs when the foot hits the ground incorrectly and bottom of the foot flips inward, allowing the joint to overstretch the ligaments on the outside. A more rare form of injury to this joint is referred to as an eversion sprain, in which case the bottom of the foot will flip up to face outwards and tear the ligaments on the inside; this sometimes results in a fracture, as well.
Of the handful of things that can be damaged in an ankle injury, the two that result in the worst pain are known as the calcaneofibular ...
... ligament, which is harder to injure, and the talofibular ligament, which runs between the talus and the smaller of the tow bones in the lower leg. The ligament that is responsible for binding your heel bone to the bone in your lower leg is the one called the calcaneofibular, and it typically takes a real brutal twist before it is hurt.
There is more than just a couple of ligaments in this joint that can take some punishment as well, such as the tissue that surrounds the joint that can get bruised and swell up to the size of a softball to the many small bones that can fracture into small splinters inside your foot. If you ever suffer such an injury, or any other sports injury where you will have to get ligament or hamstring treatment, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible, because you will want a physician to be able to check for small fractures and lesions that must be treated correctly if you hope for a proper recover.
If you don't feel like a mild ankle sprain is much of anything to concern yourself with, you may want to think ahead to a time where that one injury can make you unable to play the way you should. The best way to keep up your game and always be the best athlete you can ever be is to take good care of yourself and not ignore injuries such as these.
