Christmas In India
India being a multi lingual and secular takes pride in celebrating each and every festival that contributes to the spirit of harmony in this country. And Christmas is celebrated here with as much enthusiasm as is Diwali, Dusshera and Holi. The thing to notice here is that not only the people of the respective communities participate in these celebrations, but the masses join in as if it were a carnival. And having already had a colonial past, the Indians are more or less familiar with key concepts of Christianity and its basic tenets. And for the youngsters, it is just another occasion for revelry!
When both the aspects of celebration and religious fervor are combined together, it culminates in a celebration of life in itself, which is so elemental to Christianity. Christmas in India is characterized by much the same features that we find elsewhere. Christmas Eve means delicious home baked cakes and wine, and cookies and tarts for the children. Candles are lighted in almost every church whether big or small. Some of the important churches in India like St Joseph’s Cathedral, St John’s Church, Church of St Francis ...
... Xavier, Calcutta Hill Christian Church and many, many more not only follow the traditions of the birth of Christ just religiously but also with a sense of protective love.
Bible reading, psalm reading and singing of soulful carols underline the somber and pure mood of the occasion. Christmas in India also brings a lot of joy for the needy sections of the society. Most of the missionary choose to make donations and gift clothes and warm garments at this time of the year. The children are made happy with gifts and the elders find an occasion to celebrate, thus filling their cold winters with warmth and affection. As far as the revelry is concerned, the greater part of the crowd choose to party. Goa is perhaps the most popular destination as live concerts and cheerful make the atmosphere tantalizing. It is truly one big party all over India. Darjeeling is also a place where people celebrate christmas amidst snowfall and beauty of nature. Tourists staying in luxurious hotels celebrate their Christmas Eve with cake, good meal, music, dance and lots of merrymaking. Some of the hotels in Darjeeling like windamere hotel and Mayfair hire reknowned artists from all over the world to add spark to the festive celebrations.
In fact, Christmas time in India is the season when the tourism department too rakes in mullahs as in today’s age of globalization, curiosity among the foreigners too have increased regarding the kind of celebration in a country like India that has always prided itself on being true descendants of the Aryans! All in all, it just means happiness for everyone.
