The meaning of Lakshadweep is a lakh of islands but there are only thirty six islands. With an area of thirty two square kilometers it is the tiniest union territory of India. Lakshadweep includes twelve atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks.
Due to its isolation and spectacular setting Lakshadweep is popular among tourists but tourism in Lakshadweep is not fully fledged because of the restrictive policies of administration. Sea based tourism is the policy because of scarce land and resources. The domestic tourists are brought in ships and the night halt is arranged in such a way that they are boarded from the islands before night. International tourists who stay at Bangaram are brought by flight from Kochi to Agatti, which is the island homing airport.
Lakshadweep Islands is about two hundred and thirty kilometers off the Malabar Coast. The islands comprise of four thousand and two hundred square kilometer of Lagoon rich in marine wealth. The peculiarity of islands is its cover of snow white coral sands. The crystal clear water and the rich marine flora and fauna enhance the mystique of these islands. Against ...
... the vast blue sea the Lakshadweep map look like a garland of emeralds. The huge wall like reef bordering the outer side of the shallow lagoons blocks the incoming swells of the sea. The Lakshadweep islands are linked to the mainland by ships and passenger planes. Lakshadweep travel agents will provide for the access.
Lakshadweep has a tropical climate, with summer temperatures ranging from thirty five degree centigrade to twenty two degree centigrade and winter temperature between thirty two degree centigrade and twenty degree centigrade.
SPORTS or Society for promotion of nature tourism and sports is the nodal agency for the promotion of tourism in Lakshadweep. It has got its staff trained in water sports. In the absence of restaurants SPORTS has been running restaurants. Bangaram Island Resort in Bangaram, Lakshadweep Insyitute of Water Sports in Kadamt and twenty bedded tourist Home in Agatti are presently operated by private entrepreneurs on lease.
Out of thirty six islands in Lakshadweep only ten are inhabited. They are Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy.
Though all islands are blessed with the elegant coral reefs, sandy beaches, clear waters and hospitable settings different islands are marketed differently. Some are promoted for diving and water sports and some so that people may relax and savor natural settings. But it is to be noted that most are leisure trips and Sea or Lagoon based tours. Pressure on land is kept to minimum. There are plenty of opportunities for water sports like Snorkeling, Deep sea fishing, Speed boating, Wind surfing, Kayaking, Glass bottom boat sail, Lagoon Fishing, Water Scooter Ride and Banana Boating. One also can have visits to local houses, Marine Museum, Light House and few local industries.
Agatti is where nature is at its best. Shimmering coral reefs, turquoise blue lagoons, silvery beaches, lush green coconut trees and unmatched hospitality will leave you spellbound. There is a resort situated in the island. It offers some of the best swimming beach and lagoon. Lagoon is huge and shallow letting for good swim. You can engage in water sports like Scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, glass bottom boat rides, water skiing and deep sea fishing. You can also go on sea excursions to nearby uninhabited islands like Thinnakara, Parali, Kalpitty.
