How To Get The Most Out Of Your Cpap Therapy

What is it?
CPAP filters keep the air from your CPAP machine at optimal quality. All CPAP machines have filters; some of them have both a replaceable, disposable filter that catches finer debris, and a larger, reusable foam filter for removing larger particulates. Regular maintenance and upkeep of these filters is imperative. Keeping your filters clean, and replacing them when necessary is tantamount to a good night’s sleep. The filter is located at the air intake valve, on the back of your CPAP machine. Keeping this valve and the area around it free of debris and obstruction is particularly important. Bedding, curtains, tissues, and like materials can easily block the air intake valve which instantly reduce the performance of your CPAP machine.
How to choose:
Your CPAP equipment should be clearly marked with the type of filter it uses. If you are having trouble finding this information, the easiest method of selection is to use a part finder, or consult your CPAP machine provider. It is important to remember that most CPAP machine brands have their ...
... own specific filters. Not all filters are alike; filters are as varied as the machines they fit, and using the wrong one will certainly provide less than optimal performance and may reduce the longevity of your CPAP machine.
When and how?
Filter cleaning and replacement, like most other areas, is relative. The frequency with which you must replace and clean your filters varies depending on your environment. The best method is to simply check regularly. When your reusable foam filter becomes discolored, clean it. If your disposable filter becomes clogged, replace it. Do not attempt to wash and reuse disposable filters. After a few check-ups, you will soon find the frequency of maintenance that suits your particular environment. If you have pets, are a smoker (which is certainly not recommended for CPAP patients), or find yourself in a high-particulate environment, you will need to maintain your filters more frequently. Only use approved cleaning supplies to clean your reusable foam filter. Some cleaning products have ingredients in them that will break down foam or plastic, and reduce the structural integrity of your CPAP device or its peripherals. In fact, it is best to use a mild soap like Dove and water for the reusable filters. Make sure to rinse the filters thoroughly so that now soap residue remains after cleaning.
Important note:
Be sure to wash your replaceable foam filter with a mild soap on a regular basis (monthly is recommended), and replace it entirely if it becomes torn, or begins to deteriorate. Do not try to stretch its longevity. When the reusable foam filter begins to deteriorate, it essentially becomes ineffective and will reduce the performance of your CPAP machine, and its disposable filter.
