When you go on a big camping trip or outdoors excursion, you have to be prepared in case things take a turn for the worst, so having a well thought out survival backpack is an absolute must. The core idea is to have a certain amount of useful survival tools on your person at all times, so that no matter what you may need to keep yourself alive or find your way back to safety, you will always have it close at hand. To get started on assembling one of these kits, you simply have to consider the things you will likely need the most.

The first things that you will be adding to your kit are going to be the items that are considered the most essential and able to make the most difference, like fire starter kits, sharpened folding knives, camping flashlights, and rolls of good and sturdy cord. It could probably go without saying, but few things will serve you better in this type of situation than a flashlight to help you get through the dark forest, a way to start a fire that will warm your body and heat food, and a good knife and cord that you can use to build shelters and other live changing things.

Where the ...
... first set of things are practically needed for you to be able to make it alone in the forest, the next set of things you will want to look into is meant to make your time of surviving even easier and help you get back to civilization with less of a struggle. This particular set of items will generally be made up of items like a canteen for water, more batteries for when your flashlight begins to dim, and a quality compass to help you find your way out of the woods.

If your backpack happens to be roomy enough, you might even consider adding other things that will help you out a lot, like a first-aid kit or a survivalist's handbook. Though it may seem like the last thing you would need, you never can tell when you might have to have an additional tent, so considering stuffing a small one into your pack could be a good choice.

Whenever you are putting together your survival backpack, think real hard about the location you will be in and any special circumstances and necessities that could come with it. The more useful things you bring with you, the better your chance for surviving and the more likely you are to come away from those woods without a scratch.
