Basic Information On Loudspeakers
Generally, a loudspeaker is an electro mechanical transducer able to transform an electrical signal into definite sound. Usually, a loudspeaker is applied to any kind of the individual devices and drivers as well as the whole system including one or more drivers.
As a matter of fact, a loudspeaker contains several drivers able to reproduce different frequencies of sounds. The drivers consist of the subwoofers which are designed for extremely low frequencies, woofers which can differentiate low frequencies, squawkers which are meant for middle frequencies, tweeters designed for high frequencies and super tweeters for extremely high frequencies.
The greater number of loudspeakers have drivers built up in an enclosure or a cabinet that has a back opening for visualizing the wires and making the necessary adjustments. The drivers are usually connected to the main source with two wiring points. The main source can be the audio amplifier or receiver. It’s done with the help of binding post or the spring clips which are located at the back of the enclosure.
In case if positive and negative connections as well ...
... as the amplifier of the drivers aren’t connected in phase with each other, the loudspeaker will produce a wrong sound wave and a mistake will take place when a common signal is sent to the speakers. This phenomenon is called out of phase. This mistake isn’t able to damage the speakers but can spoil the sound waves.
In order to check wiring phase problems happening to your loudspeaker system is to adjust the bass tone control up and the treble control down for a short period of time. Further move the balance control in order to hear the sound coming out of left and right speakers separately. If the music bass tones are mixed to mono, make the bass louder with the control centered. But if the bass is louder if only one channel is playing, there’s probably a wiring error or the music signal isn’t mono in the low bass.
Let’s discuss major characteristics of loudspeakers suitable for live-like sound reproduction. When the sound of the instrument or voice is heard by the human ears but the source is blocked from the view, it’s possible to determine whether it comes from the loudspeaker or live. It’s possible due to the power response, the radiation in all directions that’s different between a speaker and a live source. The greater number of loudspeakers have a power response between 10dB and 20 dB from low to high frequencies.
In order to get an excellent performance from the loudspeaker system, it’s recommended to follow several properties for loudspeaker design. Purchasing a speaker, be aware that you obtain drivers with a low-linear distortion. Such drivers are able to move a great amount of air in all directions of the frequency range.
It’s better for loudspeakers to have a minimal excitation of room resonances, especially at low frequencies. So, it’s recommended to purchase low directional speakers, for instance, dipoles. The drivers should contain a low amount of stored energy in them, air cavities and filters, cabinet or enclosure.
Besides, the loudspeakers should reproduce an extended frequency response from 20 Hz and more, with no exaggerated high frequencies, on-axis or off-axis.
