Top 4 Fruit Extracts For Weight Loss
There’s good news for people who want to lose weight. Fruit extracts can be very useful for your weight loss. Here we introduce four of them.
Grapefruit Extract: Grapefruit extract is thought to reduce weight by lowering insulin hormone levels---which regulate fat metabolism. DeliciousLiving.com reports on a 2004 study carried out at San Diego's Scripps Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center, involving 100 overweight men. The study subjects were given either a 500 mg capsule of whole grapefruit extract or a placebo three times daily.
The results showed that over a three month period the men taking the grapefruit extract showed a significant improvement in body weight, body fat and waist circumference when compared to the placebo group, whose diet did not include any form of grapefruit. Although this study seems promising, insufficient evidence exits to prove the benefits of grapefruit extract on weight loss.
Garcinia Cambogia Extract: The hydroxycitric acid extracted from the garcinia cambogia fruit could help you lose weight. Hydroxycitric acid, similar to the citric acid found in oranges, may reduce ...
... fat and help decrease your appetite. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, test tube examinations found that hydroxycitric acid prevents carbohydrates from being stored as fat.
In addition, testing on animals suggests hydroxycitric acid may be an appetite suppressant. Despite promising laboratory results, further studies are needed to prove the effectiveness of garcinia cambogia extract as a weight loss tool.
Irvingia Gabonensis Extract: This African fruit, also known as African Mango, is used medicinally by most tropical Africans and may be a "natural weight loss pill," according to nutrition expert Dr. Ray Sahelian. Irvingia gabonensis is thought to promote weight loss by reducing body fat production through genes and enzymes that regulate metabolism, says Sahelian. A 2009 study at the University of Yaounde in Cameroon, observed the effects of irvingia gabonensis on 102 obese adults.
Study subjects took either 150 mg of fruit extract or a placebo two times daily for 10 weeks. Those given irvingia gabonensis extract lost on average about 12 kg and exhibited a significant decrease in body weight, body fat and waist circumference when compared to the placebo group. While research is encouraging, irvingia gabonensis has not been sufficiently proven to reduce weight.
Bitter Orange Extract: Extracts from bitter orange peels are frequently found in weight-loss supplements. According to the Mayo Clinic, some explorations of bitter orange extract suggest moderate benefits as a weight-loss aid when combined with exercise and diet. However, it's not worth the risk, says Mayo Clinic Nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky.
Demand for bitter orange extract increased after a chemically similar supplement, ephedra, was banned. Unfortunately, due to their comparable components, bitter orange extract and ephedra share the same serious side effects. Bitter orange extract chemicals may increase heart rate, blood pressure, migraines and cause fainting, strokes and heart attacks. It also can interact with other stimulates such as caffeine, says Zeratsky. Evidence indicates bitter orange extract may benefit weight loss, yet it is strongly discouraged because of dangerous health risks.
Although these fruit extracts can help you lose weight, before you use them, you’d better consult your doctor to ensure you use them in a proper way.
