Exterior window shutters are believed to have been around since as far back as ancient times. It is said that the Greeks made shutters for the purpose of allowing sunlight and ventilation into rooms during the day, and they provided safety and privacy in the evenings. These first shutters were made of an unexpected material - marble! It is also believed that these shutters shielded their occupants from heavy rains and thunderstorms that were so common in those Mediterranean areas. It is hard to believe that a house improvement that was once made of marble, are now made of things such as vinyl and wood; as a compliment to exterior materials such as wood shake and vinyl siding.

In the years following, the use of shutters spread throughout Europe and even the poorest of people had their makeshift versions; crafted of bundles of sticks, reeds and pieces of timber. Around the 18th century, the use of home shutters spread to areas like Britain and America. In colonial architecture, shutters were used more for aesthetic purposes as opposed to being utilized for necessity. Going into the 20th century, variations of metal ...
... shutters became prevalent, such as shutters that are brought down on warehouse doors. Moving on the 21st century, we now have many forms of shutters of the wood, polymer and vinyl variety.

Now, shutters are used for a myriad of purposes. Exterior options are used to enhance the architectural style of a home or building, and interior shutters can be used for the same reasons as the ancient Greeks; to control how much sunlight is let into a room or to let air in at a controlled rate if your windows are open. There are so many materials, shapes and sizes available, that homeowners can have free reign in creativity to find their desired effect and purpose. The use of new materials also helps by adding the benefits of little upkeep and low maintenance as well.

Different shutter choices can be utilized to accent different exterior materials and architectural design, such as brick exteriors, stucco or exterior vinyl siding. The options are pretty much limitless on what kind of visual appeal can be created to give a building diversity, character and elegance. When you decide to start the process of renovating or rehabbing the exterior of your home or other building, you can contact a contractor who can open your eyes to options you may not have even known were out there!
