Most exterminators get asked a number of questions on a regular basis and one of the most frequently asked questions is: “Can I continue to have my scheduled pest control appointments while I’m pregnant?” It is important to know that pregnancy and pest control are not mutually exclusive, but there are a few things to know to keep Mom and baby safe and healthy.

Read up on the subject.

A little research may ease you mind about residential pest control. Most commonly used pesticides are perfectly safe when used properly. Their use is highly regimented and controlled.

Many of the most often used pest control substances are synthetic form of pyrethrin, an organic substance derived from a flower with extraordinary pest-repellant properties. Some also use the original, organic formulas as well.

Talk to your pest control company.

It’s perfectly acceptable to ask questions of your Northern Arkansas pest control company. Find out what chemicals they are using and where they apply them within your home. Yours will certainly not be the first call from a concerned parent they have ever received.

Ask ...
... what the pesticide use statement says and see if you can research the substances online. (Just be judicious in the site you choose. Many have a serious bias one way or another and may give only inflammatory, not accurate, information.)

Find out if your exterminator uses green methods. Some may use organic compounds or have options for just this occasion.

Talk to your doctor.

Spend a few minutes talking about the subject with your OB/GYN at your next appointment. He or she will be able to set your mind at ease and give you some pointers on how to steer clear of anything hazardous to your or your developing baby.

Use common sense.

Your own good sense will go a long way in keeping you safe during your pregnancy. Plan to be out of the house during the scheduled treatments. Go to a neighbor’s house for a visit. Check with your pest control agent to see how long they recommend you stay away. Don’t touch wet chemicals when you return. Open a few windows to let in fresh air and let the odors out. Be sure all food is covered and tightly contained before your exterminator arrives.

Remember the alternative.

When you are thinking about whether or not certain pest control measures are safe enough, take a minute to think about how unhealthy it is to have pests in your home. Mice, rats, roaches and other pests carry diseases that can be far more dangerous than the substances used to keep them away.

Be sure and speak to your pest control professionals at Hopper Environmental Services for more information about the products they are using.
