Different Skin Conditions Affect How You Feel About Yourself

With a desire to have beautiful skin and look like all your favorite idols and movie stars, it can be devastating to have a skin condition that makes you feel bad about yourself. But unfortunately that happens all too often especially with teens and singles who are trying to compete with others who have flawless skin. Looking like your peers is what every teen wants and does not want to stand out in the crowd because "they look different."
A skin condition can definitely make you look different no matter what that condition is. If you have blemishes, itchy or blotchy red skin or cracked scaly skin - you are embarrassed and want to go and hide until it all goes away. Symptoms vary with the type of skin condition but some of the more common ones include acne, psoriasis or Rosacea. Eczema is another skin condition that can affect not only the face, but the hands and feet as well. Hyper-pigmentation or melasma is another problem that can occur where the skin is darker in some areas than on your "normal" skin.
Acne is Most Common
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions that affects up to 80% of teens during ...
... adolescence and can affect adults into their 40s along with women who are pregnant. It is generally worse in people who have oily skin - although it can occur in any skin type - because the excess oil or debris gets clogged in the pores and becomes blackheads or whiteheads or develops into cystic acne that becomes inflamed or infected. These cysts can rupture and cause scars.
Other Types of Skin Conditions
Rosacea has symptoms of facial flushing or red lines caused by enlarged blood vessels. It could also have stinging and burning that may occur when you frown or laugh. It usually results in pimples or similar bumps and a thickening of the skin on the nose. It generally will look like you have sunburn.
Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis and will feature red inflamed skin with silver scales that can itch and be painful as well. They sometimes crack or bleed and can merge into one another. It also affects the fingernails and toenails with pitting and discoloration that might start to detach from the nail bed. It can also manifest itself with scaly plaques on the scalp.
Eczema usually happens in childhood but can occur at any age. The most common type is atopic dermatitis that can affect the face, hands, feet or knees and will show itself with itchy skin rash that is most often red and dry. In children it most often occurs in the elbows or behind the knees while adults usually have it on their hands.
Hyper-pigmentation can be natural as in a birthmark that is a darker color of skin than your normal skin color. Melasma is a common skin condition that can occur from over exposure to the sun and is quite common for pregnant women to experience this during pregnancy but it goes away afterwards.
There are many other skin conditions that can occur sometimes only briefly like a rash or fungal infections, cysts, hives, warts or poison oak or poison ivy. But any of these can affect our looks and make us look unattractive even for a little while. Whenever this occurs, we become more sensitive to how we are perceived by our peers.
Skin Care Products Affect Your Skin Condition
Some skin conditions can be very serious and have implications that will affect you the rest of your life. If you have a skin condition that you are unsure about or the products you are using are not clearing up or improving the problem, you should seek advice from a dermatologist or skin care professional. There are many skin care products on the market and choosing the right one for your skin type and for the skin condition you are experiencing makes it essential to seek professional advice to ensure that your skin is taken care of properly. If the product you are using is incorrect you could do further damage to your skin without even realizing it.
