Is Grape Seed Extract A Boon To Diabetics
Researchers publishing the results of two independent studies in the British Journal of Nutrition have demonstrated that polyphenols antioxidants found naturally in grape seed extract can prevent the buildup of fat in muscle tissue that is a precursor to metabolic disorder and diabetes.
The current estimated total number of people with diabetes globally is 366 million, and will most likely rise to 552 million within the next two decades if no urgent action is taken immediately, i.e. 10% of the world's adult population, according to a new report "Diabetes Atlas", produced by the International Diabetes Federation.
Among those different types of diabetes, Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Millions of Americans have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and many more are unaware they are at high risk.
Diabetes is managed with a combination of exercise, diet and medication. The goal of therapy is to control blood glucose levels in order to prevent the immediate signs and symptoms of high blood glucose levels, as well as prevent the long–term complications of diabetes. The appropriate treatment ...
... for an individual depends on the type of diabetes and its severity.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is first treated with weight reduction, a diabetic diet, and exercise. When these measures fail to control the elevated blood sugars, oral medications are used. If oral medications are still insufficient, insulin medications are considered.
The longer you have diabetes, the more likely you are to develop other health conditions caused by high blood sugar levels. The American Diabetes Association notes that diabetics have a higher than average risk of dying from a heart attack. A study in the November 2007 issue of the "Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology" reports that grape seed proanthocyanidin extract significantly reduced heart damage in diabetic rats.
A close look at the chemical makeup of grape seeds gives us an idea why its extract contains so many health benefits. The main active ingredient in grape seeds is oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs. OPCs contain antioxidants and antihistamine properties. Antioxidants reduce oxidative stress by attacking and destroying free radicals, molecules that can destroy cell DNA. The organ damage that many diabetics develop over time may be worsened by oxidative stress.
Although grape seed extract have shown potential promising effects on diabetes, whether it can be of benefit in treating diabetes and preventing long-term complications has not yet been conclusively proved by clinical studies. Do not take this supplement to treat diabetes without your medical practitioner's knowledge and approval.
