Grape Seed Extract Contraindications
Grape seed is known for its antioxidant properties. Grape seed extract, the extract of grape seeds has been studied for antioxidant and cardiovascular properties, as well as for many other health conditions such as venous insufficiency and ophthalmologic disorders.
Grape seed extract is a nutrient primarily derived from the seeds of grapes but is found in the skin and stems. It has powerful antioxidant properties and has protective compounds known as flavonoids. These include oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), quercetin, catechin, ellagic acid and reveratrol, which are also found in red wine. OPCs may be up to fifty times more potent than vitamin E and twenty times more potent than vitamin C in terms of their bioavailable antioxidant activity.
Grape seed extract is marketed as a skin revitalizer, a treatment for allergic conditions and a heart disease preventative. It has powerful antioxidants that may combat harm caused by free radicals in your body, which can damage your cells. It’s also used to lower blood pressure, to ease premenstrual syndrome and to treat varicose veins. This extract, however, has several ...

Grape seed extract side effects have not been reported in the medical literature, but very few human studies have been done. In one study with cancer patients given radiation therapy and grape seed extract 100 mg three times a day orally for 6 months, no major adverse reaction were reported.
Theoretically, anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications could cause drug interactions with grape seed extract. Such interactions may occur if the supplement is taken in combination with aspirin, heparin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or warfarin. These interactions could possibly increase your risk of bleeding, including dangerous internal bleeding. However, the risk may be more serious with potent prescription drugs and less dangerous with drugs like NSAIDs.
Grape seed extract is considered nontoxic and has been extremely well tolerated in clinical trials. Grape seed side effects are rare. Those reported include mild stomach upset, dizziness, or itchy rash. No known grape seed extract contraindications. No known drug interactions.
There is no reported toxicity associated with standard dosages of grape seed extract. But information regarding safety and efficacy in pregnancy and lactation is lacking. Therefore, pregnant and breast feeding mothers should not supplement with grape seed extract, as its safety on developing babies and infants has not been accurately assessed.
In addition, caution is advised when administering supplements containing grape seed polyphenols at the same time as vitamin C to hypertensive patients because increases in blood pressure may occur.
