However, if you plan to live in the house you are paying for, then it is an expense.

Here's a tip. Generally speaking, the price of property will always increase over time. Make your house an investment by living in it for now and selling it when the price of increases in your area. Chances are after 5 years your home will be worth much more than the price you paid for. Renting a home is more expensive than paying in installments for a house to own.
