An electric or portable (battery powered) drill looks a rather complicated thing, although very easy to use. The common drills have a pistol shape that makes them easy to use. Each drill has a trigger to be squeezed to make the drill rotate. You can also often find a safety button on the pistol handle that should be pressed when squeezing the trigger to make the drill rotate.

To switch on the drill plug the cord into an electrical outlet. If it’s battery powered just insert the battery pack into a docking station on the bottom of the pistol handle. The battery pack should be charged between uses in another docking station that’s connected to an electrical outlet.

A drill should have a drill bit. The latter is the piece at the end of the drill creating the drilling. Drill bits are available in a wide range of sizes (diameter) as well as length. So, insert the bit into the drill.

There’s an opening on the end of the drill's barrel. The dull end of the drill bit has to be inserted into this hole. Now tighten the drill bit into this very hole to make it secure. It can be done in two ways. The most common ...
... way involves the use of a chuck key (a small piece of petal having a right angle). One piece of the key is suitable for the tightening collar around the bit. You’ll find there a hole. Then turn the key clockwise tightening the collar over the bit. You should turn it counterclockwise to loosen the collar and set the bit free. At that moment, the drill should be unplugged from its power source.

Another way involves a chuck key. You’ll find two tightening collars at the end of the drills barrel. Insert the bit into the outermost collar, then grasp the collar making it immobile. With some power produced by squeezing the trigger the loose collar starts spinning freely and tightening the bit into the collar. To tighten the bit the collar should spin clockwise, and in order to loosen it the collar should turn counterclockwise. Determine the direction of the collar's by moving a switch on the drill located near the trigger.

At that stage your drill is ready to work. Generally, drills are used for making holes for further inserting of a fastener, screw, or bolt to hold two or more kinds of material. The diameter of your drill bit should be suitable for the size of your fastener. A too small hole can be used for inserting your fastener. A too big hole won’t hold the fastener in a proper way. The diameter of a bit is usually measured in inches or centimeters. In case of losing track of the bit's original packaging noting size templates or the bit's size search the one at hardware stores to define the bit's size.

When you have the proper bit size that’s securely settled into the drill, you can start drilling. By the way, the bit’s material should be appropriate for the material you are drilling, as well as be specially designed for the metal you’re drilling through. The wrong bit can damage the drilled material and your task won’t be accomplished. And a wood bit won’t penetrate the metal.
