Unless you’re the first and only business owner to sell the products or services that you offer to your market, you’re going to need a way to make yourself stand out from the crowd.

To discover what makes you unique, there are three core elements you can use to show your customers what your business is all about: a mission statement, your company philosophy and your code of ethics.

In this article, I want to touch specifically on creating the philosophy for your company.

Your business philosophy is more or less about you or the respective owner of the company it’s being written for.

It is a set of boundaries in which you are comfortable in running your business.

Since your core values are a big part of you as an individual, your business philosophy should also be just as unique. You can help make sure that is the case, by knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are.

This is especially important, since the philosophy of your business will be transparent as you work with clients and peers in your market.

Here is a quick, simple approach for creating your business ...
... philosophy:

Remember that a large part of your philosophy will be based on your strengths and weaknesses.

To organize your thoughts, get a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the middle of the page.

The left side will hold your positives, and the right will hold your negatives.

In other words, what you value most, as well as what you want to see in your business, will be written in the left column.

What you want to avoid in your business, should go in the right.

It’s important to remember that this document, when finished, will be a very important piece in the structure of your company. There’s no rush, so be sure to take enough time and note every positive and negative as you go along.

In the end, you’ll have a documented set of boundaries that share what is tolerated in running your business. To write your actual philosophy, you simple draw from the list until you’ve touched on each point.

For an example of what your finished business philosophy might look like, have a look at our philosophy here.
