Ssl Certificate - Its Role On Internet Security
Most of us have possibly encountered instances when our web browser would warn us that a certain website we are entering is unsafe and could possibly compromise our important information. These instances would even discourage us to continue going to the website because we are afraid of the consequences if we continue. Sometimes our browser would even ask us to view the certificate of the website before we could continue browsing the said website. But what is this certificate?
This certificate is what master's degree in information security experts call SSL certificate. SSL certificate or Secure Socket Layer certificate is a security feature for Internet sites that offers online transactions to different Internet users such as online shopping, online banking, money transfer and other transactions that require important information. Information like credit card numbers, personal information, banking details, log-in info and password will be encrypted and the information will be transferred over the web. This way the exchange ...
... of information between the website and the Internet user will be safe and secured from the peering eyes of the third party.
If the data is not encrypted or protected, chances are they could be used for malicious purposes by these third party viewers of these sites. These third parties can be individual hackers or an organized cybercrime syndicate who has vile plans for the compromised information. They could use the information to clear out a victim's savings or use the victim's credit card to purchase products and services. If that isn't bad enough, these hackers could use the victim's personal information for other malicious deeds they will do, masking themselves as the poor victim – framing him or her for something he or she did not do.
Those are the reasons why websites with online transactions must have an SSL certificate. Internet users nowadays are far smarter than they were before. In fact, they know if the website will secure and protect their information or not. No person would want to conduct business with any website that couldn't protect their information. Once they see that the website has no SSL certificate, they will ignore the site and move on to another one.
SSL protocol was created by master's degree information security experts of Netscape back in 1994 and the protocol works in this following manner. The web browser will first request a secure web page from an Internet user. Once the website has the SSL certificate, the web server will send the certificate along with its public key. Once the web browser receives the certificate, the web browser will check the certificate's validity and it will check whether the certificate belongs to the website or not. If it is valid and has been issued by a certain trusted party like the Certificate Authority, then the browser will allow the user to access the site. However, if this is not the case, then the web browser will display some sort of warning to the user to let them know that it is not safe to proceed further because the website has no SSL certificate.
Once the user will key-in his or her sensitive data, the browser will use the public key so that the data will be encrypted. It will then send the encrypted data together with the encrypted URL and http data over the Web. The web server will decrypt the encrypted data and it will use its private key to do so. Furthermore, in order to decrypt the URL and http data, the server will use its symmetric key. The web server will send back the requested http data and html document in its encrypted form along with the server's symmetric key. By using the sent symmetric key, the user's browser will decrypt the html document and http data; after decryption, the browser will then display the information on the screen.
This is the way how the Secure Socket Layer or SSL certificate secures the transactions over the Web. The SSL certificate will contain the website's company name, domain name, company's address and the details about CA and SSL certificate.
Anyone could log-on to www.ssl.com to know more about SSL certificates. Its ms in information security experts and management works hard with their partners in providing the best possible security to different types of companies.
