We all want healthy bread and not only that – we want it to be tasty and fulfil all the family’s needs!

Here we look at what makes bread healthy and then look at an easy recipe for some delicious and healthy fat-free raisin bread.

What makes bread healthy

Wholemeal bread is a fantastic source of dietary fibre.

But why is fibre so important to us? Well, it helps to keep our digestive systems healthy and control our blood sugar and cholesterol levels. The fibre in bread also makes us feel fuller for longer making it highly valuable to anyone on a diet – you’ll be less likely to snack in between mealtimes.

On the most part, it is also a low fat food – remember that what can make it fatty is what you put on it.

Finally, for those of you who are diet conscious, or in the least want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you’ll be looking to avoid sugar – which is great, because most breads are low in sugar.

Whilst many supermarket sold breads do contain some level of fat, here we ...
... look at how you can make your own fat-free bread at home.

Fat-Free Raisin Bread

For this recipe you’ll need the following ingredients to create a small loaf:

- 2/3 cup of water

- 3 tablespoons of plain yogurt

- 1 tablespoon of sugar

- 1 teaspoon of salt

- 1.5 teaspoons of active dry yeast

- 3 tablespoons of raisins

- ¾ teaspoon of cinnamon

Start by combining all dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, then add the liquid ingredients of water and yogurt.

Grab a separate bowl and lightly oil. Place the dough inside, turning to cover it in the oil.

Cover the bowl and leave to rise for approximately an hour. Once it has doubled in size, tip onto a lightly floured surface and begin to knead for approximately 8 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding the raisins.

Mould into an 8x4 inch brad pan, cover with a damp cloth and leave to rise for another hour.

Take this time to heat the oven to 190C – once the dough is ready, place in the oven and bake for approximately 30-35 minutes until golden brown on top and it makes a hollow sound when the base is tapped.

Remove from the pan and leave to cool.
