"Shin splints can be mild to severe and are defined as being: "inflammation and pain located on the inner part of your lower leg (tibia or shin bone) that occurs when the tissue that joins your muscles to the tibia becomes inflamed and irritated." When you use certain parts of your body more than others you can create a lot of damage; some of these injuries are caused by participating in extreme sports.

Such sports as running, football, soccer, long jumping, rugby or field hockey can cause extensive damage to your legs and ankles; the damage can come from high impact sports and also they can cause shin splints. When you maintain diet and exercise you can alleviate these effects. This gives your bones better stability all the way around and you need such strength to play sports.

If you think that you may have a shin splint you should look for some of the obvious signs: pain located directly in the shin area, throbbing, swelling to the outside area and redness. These are just a few things that would be a sure give away. Depending on what sport you are involved in it is going to differ from person to person. ...

Warming up before you do any form of exercise or sport is advisable to do to prevent injury. Shoes are a big help to, depending on what you are doing; they make different ones for all sorts of things just make sure you have the right ones so your injury risks are reduced. If you're planning to change any of the normal exercises that you do make sure that you add additional warming up first so you don't pull anything.

Overworking the muscles or muscles that go in different directions unexpectedly can cause a lot of problems to your legs as well. You need to make sure that the muscles in your lower legs, or hamstrings and the upper muscles, known as quadriceps are in good shape. Some sports areas have hard surfaces that are played on and you need to be extra careful with these; some of the sports include: basketball, running or tennis

You need to have ample healing time for any injury or it can keep coming back; some of these injuries can get so bad that you will never be the same again. This could make you favor the uninjured side, and this will cause it to eventually become as damaged as the other side. If it is very serious you may need to seek treatment. Shin splints can become more painful the longer that you let them go and walk around further; it could throw off your balance too."
