Using International Mobiles To Make Calls Overseas
Whether you are planning a vacation abroad or an overseas business trip, carrying a mobile phone has become a necessity no matter which part of the world you intend to visit. It becomes more important to stay in contact with your loved ones once you are away from home.
Due to difference in technology from one country to another it is quite possible that your local mobile phone may not work in some other country. Therefore you must consider whether you need to buy an international mobile phone or not before you leave.
International Mobile Networks
However, there are two different types of networks that are used commonly by major cell phone carriers. These networks are known as GSM and CDMA. The GSM is considered to be the most powerful network in the US as it can cover approximately 75% of the developed world. However, the remaining 20% is covered by CDMA which also exists in the US.
Even if you are carrying a GSM phone in the US, this does not guarantee that you will be able to use it anywhere in the world. One reason for is ...
... the variation in the frequencies which act as an obstacle. The only solution you have in this case is to opt for an international mobile phone as they are programmed to work at different frequencies. For instance a triple band phone can work on three different frequencies, 850 MHz, 900 MHz and 1900 MHz.
When you consider buying an international mobile phone you must do some research to stay abreast with the latest technological developments. You can easily buy it directly from a manufacturer or a dealer within your own vicinity.
Calling from your International Mobile Phone
Once you get an international mobile phone, making calls from them is not a complex process but it may cost you much more if you start dialing without prior research.
In many countries cell phones are assigned separate phone codes which are different from the area code of that particular country. This helps in differentiating whether you are calling on a mobile number or a landline. This is important because typically mobile phone charges are more than those of landlines.
However, under the North American Numbering Plan, most of the country such as the US, Canada and the Caribbean do not differentiate in cell phone and landline codes therefore it is difficult to determine whether you are making a call on a mobile number or landline.
Nevertheless, the best way to reduce your cost on international mobile calling is to use prepaid phone calling cards. There are various different options available for calling cards and you can easily choose the one meeting your requirements.
