Infidelity is not a modern occurrence, but has been happening since time immemorial. What is different now is, perhaps, that it is not so discreet and is brought to light more often than not. Also, there is perhaps an increase in the number of women who are unfaithful in a marriage than ever before. This is possibly because women go out to work and have as much opportunity to meet other men as their husbands have to meet women. Why women stray is probably different from why men stray.

Modern Lives

The modern woman is emancipated, independent and knows how to get what she wants. Women today are perhaps patterning themselves after men and take equality a little too literally. They consider that what is good for the goose is, indeed, good for the gander. If they sense that their spouses are straying, they are quite likely to go out and have an affair too.

Working at close quarters with members of the opposite gender and spending hours away from home can lead to an affair. Women are no longer dependent on their husbands taking them out. They have independent social lives which can throw them in the way ...
... of temptation. Modern women are more comfortable with establishing relationships with members of the opposite gender. What can start as a platonic friendship can turn into a full-blown affair.

Craving Affection

A lot of women end up having affairs when actually they are craving affection. Perhaps, because of a lonely childhood or a spouse not satisfying an emotional need, they look for any source of affection. Some women perceive that they will get affection if they give in physically. It is an almost barter-like notion that these women have towards love and intimacy. Their constant need to feel loved leads them to stray from their marriages.

Emotional Bonding

It is commonly accepted that between men and women, the latter are far more emotional. Some women find they are married to men who do not understand their emotional needs. They become unhappy and listless and marriage becomes difficult to live with. In such a situation if they meet a man who senses and responds to their need, they can be drawn to him. They find in him a perfect emotional anchor.

Unhappy Marriage

Women usually don't give up easily on their marriage. Even if a situation is difficult, they try their best to adjust and make a marriage work. However, they reach a snapping point after which they just stop caring. When a woman is driven to stop caring about the state of her marriage, she will either walk out or do her own thing. A woman can have affair when she knows that despite all her effort her marriage is just not working.

While men are drawn to beauty more easily, women need to respect and look up to a man. If a spouse is careless about his career and a woman is far more successful, she could slowly lose respect for him. When a woman starts losing respect for a man she stops finding him attractive. At such a point in time, if another man with qualities she admires comes along, she could be drawn to him.

A spouse's constant infidelities can drive a woman to do the same thing. It is not that a woman will go ahead and have an affair, just because her husband is having one. However, if a man flaunts his infidelities, a woman can harden herself and remain detached. If, at that point, she meets a man she is attracted to, she could have an affair feeling she has some justification.

Conclusion

By nature, women are probably inclined to being more monogamous than men. Women lay more emphasis on emotional bonding and understanding rather than just physical satisfaction in a relationship. When a woman strays, it is more inclined to be for a lasting and deep affair than just a fling. Women tend to perceive love and intimacy to go hand in hand whereas men can separate the two.

It is usually because a woman's emotional needs are not being met that she strays. This is not to say that these women don't just have a fling and move on. However, more often than not, if a woman strays it will be for a reason more than just an attraction. Also, if a woman is happy at home and in love with her husband, it is extremely unlikely that she will ever stray.
