If you ask New Zealand people what lake is the most beautiful, I think a lot of people will answer “blue milk lake”. The blue milk lake locates in South Island of New Zealand, and its original name is Pukaki Lake, with the area of 169 square kilometers. Speaking of its generation, it is closely related with the glacier movement. After the fading away of Mount Cook Glacier, the basin was formed under the erosion of South Alps glaciers and lateral Moraine. And the large melted water of ice and snow accumulate at there and form this barrier lake.

At the first glance of this lake, people must be fascinated by its color. Among the huge mountains, the lake water is just like the fragrant milk poured into the blue ocean, which has the milk blue light under the sunshine. One geologist in New Zealand said that it is due to the large number of rock particles and minerals floating in the lake to reflect the milk blue light.

In New Zealand, 55% of energy comes from the energy reserves of Lake Pukaki and the nearby Lake Tekapo. In fact, in order to make better use of the barrier lake, New Zealand people built the huge dam ...
... on its gravel and sand layer. The dam of 61 meters height and 823 meters length has the total capacity of 6.3 billion steres, and the water level is controlled by the gate. Obviously, it is a large hydroelectric power station.

On the diversion canal of the Pukaki Lake hydroelectric power station, we can see a salmon farm. The lake water comes from the melted glacier, so it is very pure without any pollution. Salmons have to move continuously in the turbulent water to maintain balance, so the salmon meat here is very tight and delicious. It is said that the indigenous people in New Zealand still treat the lake water as holy water and only use it in a number of ritual activities.

Standing beside the Lake Pukaki, you will find it is the best place to watch Southern Alps. If you come out from Lake Pukaki to Highway 8, you will find a piece of plain before Mount Cook, which is original one part of the lake. But now it has become the pure and wild wetland. It is also one of the shooting locations of the movie “Lord of the Rings”. So, I will strongly recommend you to visit there if you are the movie fans.
