Bathroom Vanity Installation: The Step-by-step Process For Installing A Bathroom Vanity
Replacing your bathroom vanity is a great way to revive your bathroom without undertaking a major remodeling project. Now that you bought your bathroom vanity, or if you went high end, your decorative bathroom furniture vanity, how do you install it? Below I have outlined the step-by-step process for successfully removing your old bathroom vanity and replacing it with your new bathroom vanity.
It is important to make that the water lines are shut off and supply lines are disconnected before starting. Use a bucket to catch water from supply line and p-trap when you separate them from the sink. Loosen and remove the p-trap (the center part of the curved pipe).
Use a utility knife to loosen any caulk that might be between the bathroom vanity and wall. Rock the bathroom vanity carefully to loosen and remove without risking damage to the surrounding wall.
Use a screwdriver to carefully remove any screws that are attaching the bathroom vanity to the wall. Once detached, remove the old bathroom vanity and move it out of the way.
Depending on the condition of the sink and counter top, when you ...
... replace the bathroom vanity, you can either reuse the existing countertop or replace the sink and countertop to match the new.
Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs that will be used to anchor your new bathroom vanity and mark them with a pencil. Make the marks slightly higher than the vanity top so that they are easily visible .
Position the bathroom vanity and make sure it is flush against the wall(s). Use shims (if needed) and a carpenter's level to assist with placement and make sure the bathroom vanity is even.
Locate wall studs and drive 2-1/2" wall board screws to anchor the bathroom vanity to wall. If you are having trouble locating the wall studs, make sure that you use wall anchors or for plaster walls, use special anchors.
You might consider adding a new faucet to match the new bathroom vanity, sink and countertop. If you decide on a new style, be sure to install the new faucet before installing the new vanity top.
Apply tub and tile caulk to secure the vanity top to the vanity. Position countertop on the vanity.
Reconnect the plumbing. Start by replacing the p-trap -- which only costs a few dollars more. Invest in some teflon tape to make the connections easier and seal the joints.
Attach supply lines to the water source and turn water back on.
Carefully apply thin line of caulk around all countertop edges.
