The college application process can be very overwhelming to some students. Several schools require an application, ACT score or SAT score and a college application essay. The ACT and SAT score are completed when the tests are taken during high school. The application is informational in nature; the student fills out the form and answers the questions. The tricky part comes when you get to the college essay section of the application. The essay is really a college interview in the way of an essay. Below are several tips that will help you with your college application essay.

The first thing to do is examine the essay portion of the application. There will usually be a format to use, this must be followed or the essay and application could be disregarded. The next thing to do is actually start the application essay process. The essay should be written in first person, because it is you who is doing the talking.

Next an outline should be created. The outline will highlight all the important sections and data supporting your essay. The essay will need an opening paragraph that states or answers the essay question. ...
... This paragraph needs to contain the main idea of the paper. A lot of college essay readers like to know exactly what the writer is trying to say when they read the first paragraph.

The body of the essay should support or highlight your main idea. The body of the college application essay should contain real examples or tangible events. The writing should be clear, concise and right to the point. This is not a fictional essay; it is an essay supporting your reasons for wanting to attend this particular college.

The closing paragraph should summarize your main idea. You want to end your essay on a positive note, nothing sad or depressing. Remember, the last paragraph will be what the reader will remember the most. Basically, if you follow the directions, keep the word count equal or below the limits and be honest and straightforward, your college essay writing experience will be a success.

It is also your opportunity to present yourself and write what is important to you. What are you passionate about and how can you contribute to the college? Let them see you as a person and not as a formula. The rest of your application contains lots of computer generated averages. The essay is where you have self-expression and can reveal your individuality.
