The Outer Banks are a series of island just off the coast of North Carolina, and are among the most popular beach destinations in the United States. However, it can also be an ideal place to visit during the winter months. Beautiful natural scenery, lots of historical landmarks and recreation activities combine to fill your days in this amazing location. In addition, there are many beach resorts which offer steep discounts in the colder months, along with the many beach spa establishments. Here is a guide to planning your winter getaway to the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

Where to Stay in the Outer Banks

Your options are nearly unlimited when it comes to winter bookings in this beach town. While in the summer prices can be higher and hotels and rentals booked months in advance, when the cooler weather hits you have many choices to select from. Those who enjoy hotels can find beach resorts with discounted room rates, many of which offer beach spa packages with treatments included in the overall price. If you have a larger group, consider a rental home, which can help you feel more comfortable during your stay as ...
... well as save you money. If it comes with a fully equipped kitchen, you can even prepare basic meals, heading out just for dinners if that is preferable.

What to do in the Outer Banks

Just because the waters are too cold for a swim, it doesn't mean you can't enjoy the glorious beaches. Stroll along the sand, admire the waves or try your luck fishing in the open water. Cape Hatteras, the famed lighthouse, is open for visitors during the winter, and is often considered more enjoyable due to the lack of crowds often found in the summer. You should also plan to visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk, and the North Carolina Aquarium, which are both open year round as well. For children, there are plenty of arcades to spend an afternoon playing games. Most of the dining establishments stay open during the winter months, and provide special attention to travelers from November to March.

Whether you are coming to Outer Banks for a weekend in a beach resort or a weeklong family vacation, the winter is a fun and affordable time to explore the much beloved islands off of North Carolina.
