One of the well known reasons, why people should be literate regarding mass communication is that it makes people more responsible citizen. These people understand that the media has been built to convey ideas, information and news about someone else's point of view. They understand that specific techniques are used to create emotional effects. You can identify these techniques and the desired and actual results. These people use the media for their own benefit and enjoyment. They know how to act, instead of being acted. Thus in this manner, these people are better citizens.
Media bring the world into our homes. It does this by making use of different modes of communication. People through this learn about so many things such as war and peace, the environment, new scientific discoveries, and so on. Most of us, in fact all of us depends on the media to know what's happening in our physical, social, economic and political environment around us. Almost everything we know about people, places and events that we can see first hand comes from this source only. We are also dependent on the media and entertainment pleasure.
In fact, it would not be wrong to say that tomorrow's world would be increasingly dominated by mass media and communications technologies. Generations of the future must understand how the media courses affect society. So, in short, it can be safely concluded that the benefits of media literacy can not be ignored and they continue to increase with an equal pace.
