Lots of people take to the woods and campsites scattered across America to enjoy a day or two of camping. Some people choose the old fashioned method of tents and sleeping bags while others prefer the motorized RV’s. Regardless of the method, why do so many people enjoy camping?

One of the common answers is based in tradition. Many families have simply set aside some time every year to go on a camping adventure. This can be a great way to spend some quality time with loved ones without the distractions of work, hobbies or electronic gadgets. Most people view this as a time to draw closer as a family and learn more about each other. As years roll by and the cares of life begin to take over most of our waking time we can look back at the solitude and enjoyment of camping out as some of the highlights of our early years. Getting outside, feeling the sunshine, listening to nature and experiencing what the natural world has to offer can settle the nerves and help people re-focus their energy on the important parts of life. It is also a way to remind us that we are all small parts of a much bigger world.


Being in the city most of us rely on technology to get through our day. Automobiles take us to work, school and the store. Computers help us connect with co-workers and get our jobs finished. Cell phones and TV’s provide us with information about current events, sports and politics. But all of that is gone on a camping trip. Most people only need a few simple items like a waterproof lighter, a Woodsman’s pal, and a compass to explore their world and enjoy all that nature has to offer.
