Trapper hats are the traditional style of hat that was worn by fur trappers that have been brought up to date. They consist of a fur cap with a small peak and built in ear muffs, which can be fastened under the chin. The ear muffs are designed to be either worn down around the ears or tied back out of the way on top of the hat. Some trapper hats have a secondary ear flap built in to allow only the actual ear to be exposed, so that you can listen out for animals and drop the flap back quickly when you are done.

Trapper hats were originally made out of the fur of the animals each trapper caught.

Modern Trapper Hats

Nowadays, most trapper hats are made out of synthetic fur and are covered with some sort of waterproof outer material as well. You can still buy trapper hats made out of real fur, but they are expensive, and real fur is not necessary for most climates.

Trapper hats are no longer fastened using cord, instead they come with buckle fastenings, poppers or Velcro.

Next, consider the type of fastening. If you are going to be wearing gloves, or worse, mittens you need to be able to fasten it easily. Generally speaking, Velcro is the best fastener for a modern trapper hat.

Trapper hats come in many different styles and colours. If you have a specific coat you will be wearing your hat with try to buy one that matches it. Trapper hats look pretty radical as it is, mixing a pink one with a grey business coat is probably a step too far.
