When in doubt – get the sandwich recipes out! Am I right or am I right?
You can’t go wrong with a good sandwich – or five. Whatever the age, beliefs or taste, there’s a sandwich for everyone. The only problem is, it’s all become a bit…. boring.
Ham sandwich, cheese sandwich, bacon sandwich, tuna sandwich….the furthest we’ve come to mixing things up is literally doing just that – add a tomatoe, some mayonnaise, we’ve even added two different sandwiches together!
Now it’s time to look to a classic, a hearty delicious one to be exact and see how we can take the sausage sandwich from an everyday snack …to a gourmet meal.
Gourmet Sausage Sandwich
For this gourmet dish you’re going to need a yellow onion, a red bell pepper, olive oil, a single gourmet sausage and some artisan bread – both of your choice – and some Dijon mustard.
Prepare
To prepare, start by thinly slicing your yellow onion – enough to fill about a quarter of a cup. Likewise for your red bell pepper, slicing it ...
... into thin strips.
Whilst doing this you want to preheat your grill to a medium temperature.
Create
Start by cooking your sausage on the grill, making sure to turn occasionally until it is fully cooked through.
Once cooked, remove from the heat and place on the side. This should take, on a medium heat, around 10-12 minutes.
Tip: For those of you who’d prefer your bread toasted, now’s the time to throw it under the grill for about 2-3 minutes.
Now, back to the stove – you want to heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over a very low heat. Add your pre sliced red bell pepper and onion, cooking slowly for 15 minutes or at least until the onions are brown.
Return your attention to the sausage and ‘split’ the sausage along it’s length. Butter your bread at this point and on one slice of the bread arrange the sausage split side down.
Coat the other slice with a tablespoon worth of Dijon mustard.
Top the sausage with the cooked pepper and onion and place the mustard coated slice on top.
Now all you need to do is enjoy.
