Any kind of metal lathe, be it a brand new one or they be used metal lathes, these all have directions to its proper use. The directions are fairly simple and simple to understand. If the machine does not come with a written set of instructions, there are many online publications of instructions for the specific brand of machine bought.

Firstly, be sure not to run the metal lathe cold. Warm it up starting at the speed of around 1000 rpm for ten minutes and get it well lubricated. Check the tools, have them ready and make sure everything is tight.

Next, locate the tool holder and insert a tool block in it. Look for the spot where you can put the insert cutter. Tighten the tool block as tight as possible. Every cutter has an insert that enables Z axis cutting or the type of cut which is from left to right.

Now, locate the tail stock. This is where the drill chuck is to be inserted. The purpose of tail stock is for drilling holes into the metal. Find the crank which is at the tip of the measuring device for accurate cuts.

Fourth step is to before you set your zero, zero point, stop the turning spindle. ...
... Get hold of a tool holder and regulate it to 0.5 inch block between thework piece and your tool. Tighten by sliding this in and out. To create an X axis, pull the tool towards you. Find the micrometer wheel and set it to zero. Then with 0.5 inch distance, start moving toward the work piece. This would then be your Z zero point.

The fifth step would be to set your X zero point by moving the Z axis to the spindle and slide it with 0.5 inch block between the work piece and the tool. Take it past the piece then set the X axis micrometer to zero and adjust the wheel to 0.5 inch away. Take note of the fact that Z axis was done a similar way but the movement of the wheel was toward you.

Sixth, take the tool away at 0.25 inch from the work piece on the Z and X axis. Distance yourself a bit before you activate the spindle again.

Lastly, take the X axis to your desired depth. Should you want to remove about 0.5 inch off the material you are working on, the material should lose on both sides 0.25.

Note: always use goggles, gloves and other safety guards whenever you use metal lathe machines.
