This little district around Madikeri is the best to visit to get away from the banality of your everyday life. My visit to Coorg taught me that the region has some of the most tranquil and larger than life experiences you can experience.Coorg is connected to Mysore by road and from Bangalore by a bus ride of around 6-7 hours.

The resorts at Coorg are of various price ranges, each offering a more attractive tour package than the next. Some resorts even have their own plantations, were they offer nature guides and plantation tours. You can pick up spices like organic vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and coffee a plenty. The spice plantations aside, Coorg is filled with tourist attractions.

Culture

The Bylakkupe area houses one of the only Tibetan settlements in South India. The Buddhist temple there offers a striking insight into the lives of Buddhist monks, and of Tibetan culture. The three grand golden Buddhas inside the temple are beautiful and offer a serene splendor and sense of calmness to all visitors. The Kodavas of coorg are a tribe whose culture is very pagan in nature. The Kodavaslive in small ...
... communities with a spiritual head, and do not subscribe to the norms of the Hindu religion.

Cuisine

Coorg is home to some of the most delicious cuisine south India has to offer. If you come across a restaurant that serves their tradition ‘panndi curry’ (pork curry) which you can eat withakkiooti, be sure to get a taste of it!

Wildlife

The wildlife in Coorg too, should not be given a miss. Be sure to visit the Dubare Elephant camp, where you can watch the elephants being bathed, and sometimes partake in the bathing process as well! The magnificence of the animals and the facts about their unique intelligence can be learnt about from the Mahouts, who trust their elephants and know them implicitly.

Activities

Trekking in Coorg too gives you a feeling of being closest to nature, as you pass various streams, forests, plantations and fields through your journey, halting for meals at some of the most picturesue location South India has to offer.

History

Finally, to get a feel of the history of this quaint region, the Madikeri Fort is a great place to visit. Once in hold of Tipu Sultan, its museum, chapel, temple and its prison are all great reminders of the history of a region that is such a beautiful blend of nature and culture.
