The explosion of technology over the last 30 years has been nothing short of mind boggling.

With the development of the micro-chip information processing has gone from a great big box in an air-conditioned room tended by a bunch of weirdo's who spoke a strange language called geek, to the situation where one can carry around almost the same processing power on a telephone, or certainly on a device about the same size as a hard cover exercise book.

The geek language still exists but they have interfaced so much with users that just about anyone can learn to transact with computers, design programs and spreadsheets

30 years ago there were no mobile phones and nowadays even in darkest Africa and deep in red china mobile phones are all pervasive. In certain countries it is not unusual to see horse drawn hay wagons pulling a load from the field on top of which sits a guy talking on a mobile phone.

The 'baby boomer' generation, who were born in the 10 years after Word War II can attest to the fact that they have in their lifetime watched groundbreaking technologies launch, make historic impacts and die ...

For example 10" 78 rpm phonograph records were the way people got to hear music. This developed into 12" 33rpm Long Player disks (LPs) a 7"45rpm known as 7singles. Although in 2011 there is a fashion for the retro nuts to try and get turn table and spin LPs no company is pressing them anymore.
Reel to reel tape recorders, cassette tapes and even the 8 track tape players became the rage as they were recordable and could be played in one's car. The recording studio's started releasing pre recorded music on cassettes and they lasted well over 20 years. Some 10 years ago a very fine piece of technology known as the mini disc (MD) came onto the market but failed because of the explosion of a superior technology, the Compact Disk. This technology, fine as it is, is rapidly being replaced in every one's minds by digital music which can be saved on things like the iPod.

As far as video goes the baby boomers have seen Black and white TV being state of the art right through to back lit LED 60" Flat screen with High definition. And that is this week, who knows what advances will be on the table by next. 3D TV without the need for headache inducing glasses is at a stage of advanced development. It is the same with recording of images. We have watched the birth and death of Betamax and the Phillips systems. Very few people have VHS recorders anymore as virtually all recoding has gone solid state.

The sad demise of Steve Jobs has seen the death of a man who drove his company with a passion but who gave us the most successful 'smart' phone of the market, as well as the other products like the iPod and iPad.
