Cerazette is an oral contraceptive that contains synthetically formulated progesterone called desogestrel as an active ingredient. Also referred to as the “progesterone-only pill”, cerazette is commonly used by women who experience problems with combined oral contraceptives. Please note that all oral contraceptives should be completely avoided should you be, or suspect that, you are pregnant.

Oral contraceptives make use of hormones that are identical to those that are produced by the body naturally to prevent ovulation from occurring. Ovulation is basically the release of an ovum during the ovarian cycle. Cerazette uses the progesterone-identical hormone called desogestrel to perform this. The hormone prevents fertilization by encouraging the body to form a mucous plug at the neck of the uterus, one that is thick enough so that the sperm cannot penetrate it and reach the ovum. The lining of the uterus is medically referred to as the endometrium, and after fertilization, the fertilized ovum attempts to implant itself on this lining. Desogestrel changes the quality of the endometrium, making it more difficult for ...
... the ovum to implant onto the wall of the uterus, so that pregnancy does not occur.

Cerazette should ideally be administered starting from the very first day of your cycle, i.e. first day of menses. If this is done, no additional forms of contraception are necessary. However, if you begin administering the pill after the first day of your menses, other contraceptive methods should be used for a short period of time. It is important to note that for oral contraceptives to work most efficiently, they should be taken at the same time daily. Should you, for any reason, miss taking the contraceptive pill for more than 12 hours, please realize that you may not be fully protected against the occurrence of pregnancy.

Cerazette should only be used on certain conditions; if these conditions are not met, then the use of this oral contraceptive may not be safe for you and is therefore not advised. One of the first conditions is that you need to be completely certain that you are not already pregnant. If you are breast-feeding, it may be safe to use this pill, but consultation with your doctor is advised beforehand. If you suffer from thrombosis, or any kind of unexplained vaginal bleeding, you cannot use this pill. Also, consult your doctor if you are somebody who suffers from TB, diabetes, high blood-pressure or epilepsy.

If you happen to experience adverse effects from the use of Cerazette, it is important for you to inform your doctor. Adverse effects may include irregular vaginal bleeding, heavy or prolonged bleeding, or even cessation of menses altogether. Common side effects of the use of this pill are nausea, lowered libido, headache, mood swings and weight gain. Very rare side effects are hair loss, ovarian cysts or lumps, painful menses or vomiting. It is important to take into consideration any other medications you may be taking should you be experiencing any unwanted symptoms, as it is not uncommon for the active ingredients of various drugs to interact in an undesired manner.
