A Reflection On Bathroom Mirrors
Every bathroom needs mirrors. We all have a regular routine including proceeding to the bathroom each morning to prepare for the day ahead. For men it might be a simple case of brushing teeth, a shave and combing the hair. For ladies its cleaning teeth, hair and of course … make-up. Therefore Bathroom mirrors are essential, and mirror style and desired quantity will vary from person to person, home to home. Some prefer a surround of mirrors so that we can see ourselves from all angles for the full assurance. Some just prefer one, to get the daily task of getting ready done.
Traditionally mirrors have taken all forms. All shapes and framing. From simple classic settings to large-scale mirrors with elaborate edging. These are generally found in bedrooms, in hallways for that last check before we leave the house, and of course the bathroom. In Australia, the bathroom was traditionally just been a functional space required for getting ready. It included the basic needs – basin, toilet, bath/shower, lighting and mirror. You could have a basic ...
... bathroom created that was simple, clean, white and built in. The bathroom would be tiled with a simple framed bathroom mirror above the vanity. This was ‘the bathroom’.
Bathroom design has changed and evolved in the last few decades as people have begun to really realise the importance of the bathroom for daily preparation as well as a place to relax and unwind. More time and money are being invested in bathroom designs as we see the installation of designer basins, toilet suites and freestanding baths, as well as enhanced ambient lighting. It is no longer desirable to have a simple pane of glass in stalled as a bathroom mirror. Designer mirrors have been the framed artwork of the bathroom space.
What we are seeing now is premium glass as well as interesting finishes including bevelled edging. But the real statement lies with the shapes and the framing. We are seeing bathroom mirrors with mahogany frames, chrome edging, black lacquer and thicker frames. We are also seeing and increased interest in various shapes and sizes. Also worth a mention, is the upsurge of elaborate decorative framing with baroque shapes, silver leafing, and floral themes reminiscent of traditional Edwardian and Victorian styles. These styles have become increasingly popular with people finishing off bathrooms with statement bathroom mirrors that are both functional as well as stand out centrepieces. These look spectacular against simple walls or even decorative wallpaper, above stylish basins and vanities as well as setting off showpiece freestanding baths.
The right mirror will enhance any bathroom, giving these spaces an increased air of prestige and luxury.
