How To Install Wordpress On Your Site Using Cpanel Or Ftp Program

Why WordPress?

Installing wordpress has many advantages, including a user-friendly content management system (CMS) and thousands of themes and plugins for almost anything you can think of.

Instead of building websites the hard way, by having to learn HTML and CSS, WordPress allows you to get an attractive website online in a matter of minutes!

Installing wordpress can be done one of two ways:

The most common (and easiest) way, is through your cPanel. The other, is to install it directly to your server using your favorite FTP program.

Most hosting companies will provide you with a cPanel admin for your account, but we’ll take a look at both ways, just in case.

Installing WordPress Through cPanel

1.) Navigate to your cPanel Login

By default, you will be able to find your cPanel login page by typing in your domain name, followed by /cpanel.

Ex. yourdomain.com/cpanel

2.) Scroll down to “Software & Services” and click on the Fantasico De Luxe icon

3.) Select WordPress from the right-hand menu. You’ll ...
... be greeted by a number of applications/scripts you can install. In this case, you’ll obviously want to select WordPress.

4.) Click New Installation, follow the prompt on the next screen After selecting “new installation”, you’ll be greeted by a form to fill out:

Install in directory: If your site is brand new and you want the whole thing to be built on WordPress, you will leave this blank.

If you already have an established site and are looking to add wordpress, then you might type in a directory name such as ‘blog’.

Ex. yoursite.com/blog

Admin Access Data: This is just another way of saying “login details” – your username and password.

Your username will be private and what you use to login to WordPress from the backend of your site.

Base Configuration: Here you can enter in your site’s basic details.

Admin Nickname - The public name that will be displayed when you create new posts.

Admin Email - The default e-mail wordpress will use for your site.

Site Name – Here you can set what the title of your site will be. It’s also a good idea to include the keywords you plan on targeting.

Site Description – A brief description of what your site is about. It’s also a good idea to use keywords here, too.

Done!

Now all you need to do is click “finish installation” and you’ll be able to see the login details for your site.

By default, your login will be yoursite.com/ wp-admin

Installing WordPress Using FTP

If you have to manually install WordPress from scratch, you’ll first need to download the files themselves.

You can do so at: http://www.wordpress.org

You’ll also need an FTP program to load your files. A free, popular solution is FileZilla: http://www.filezilla.org

After you’ve downloaded everything, extract the files to your desktop.

The first time you use FileZilla, you’ll have to add your hosting details, which will allow it to communicate with your server.

After you connect, you’ll be able to see all the current folders and directories on your server.

Here, you’ll create a new directory and then copy/upload all of your WordPress files inside that directory’s folder.

Setting Up Your MySQL Database

- From your main hosting screen, click on your MySQL icon and then click the option to “create database”.

- Type your new database name and confirm by clicking the create button

- Once you get confirmation the database has been created, click on the “Go Back” button.

- Look for the “Add Users To Your Database” option and click the user that is associated with your new WordPress site.

Copy The WordPress Files To Your Server

By now, all of your files should be extracted and ready to be placed on your server…

After you get them loaded on to your server, look for a file called “wpconfig- sample.php.

Rename that to “wp-config.php”.

In FileZilla, you can right-click files to edit them.

You’ll need to do so with the wp-config.php file, making sure to change the default database and username info to match what you setup in your MySQL admin.

Tip: If you want to make your blog more secure, you can also change the table prefix to something other than the default wp___. For added security, use letters AND numbers.

Congrats! All of the “hard stuff” is taken care of…

Now all you need to do, is run the installation script by typing in the address of the file.

If you put WordPress in your “root” directory, you’ll type: yoursite.com/wp-admin/install.php

If you put the files in a sub-directory, you’ll type: yoursite.com/subdirectorynamehere/wp-admin/install.php

That’s it!

Simply follow the online instructions to finalize everything and you’ll then be able to set your information and log in…
