Jatav are the largest community of Chamars in India, who have originated from the Jat community and belong to Indo- Aryan group of tribal’s, who mainly reside in the Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Some of the rituals in Jatav matrimony are similar to those of Kshatriya’s, some rituals like cannon shooting and usage of bow and arrow at the time of birth ceremony are quite similar to Kshatriya community.

The wedding celebrations in Jatav community are performed with enthusiasm and positive spirits. The wedding dress of the bride and groom in Jatav matrimony are similar to those followed in Hindu community. The groom dons traditional kurta dhoti or sherwani, while the bride is beautifully dressed in lehngas or sari. Preferred colors for the bridal trousseau are red, pink or other bright colors.

The food, dressing style and the wedding arrangements in Jatav wedding majorly depend on the social status and the budget for the wedding. The people residing in different states follow the traditions that are followed in that particular state, and where the wedding is taking place. The impact of region can be clearly seen in the rituals followed in the wedding.

Decoration of the wedding banquet halls and arrangement of food and music is in accordance to the personal tastes of the people. There is need for the bride and groom to respect each other and take care of their emotions as well as their requirements. According to the wedding vows, they have to stand by each other in difficult times and share all the good and bad times together. Family in India matters a lot and the Jatav matrimony plays a very important role in teaching the family value to the newlyweds and the ways to respect each other’s families. Every wedding marks the commencement of a new life for the newlywed Jatav couple.

Every community has different life style and terms on which they live, and follow the practices that are prevalent in the society.
